Job summary

The Fracture Clinic at the Royal Cornwall Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and knowledgeable nurse for the role of the Deputy Lead Nurse.

This is a very busy acute clinic which sees between 60 - 80 patients/ day (both adults and children) and the team strive to provide quality, timely and effective care to every one they treat.

The successful candidate will need to have excellent communication skills, be keen to be involved in service development as well as be confident in leading a small team of staff on a day-to-day basis.

Trauma and orthopaedic knowledge would be required and an interest in wound care would be an advantage.

Training and support on management and team leadership issues will be provided.

Main duties of the job

To oversee the daily clinic which can have between 60 - 80 patients attend, both adults and children. This will include providing direct care for patients with complex wound dressings, supporting the Virtual Fracture Clinic (following training), as well as ensuring that the clinic is run in a timely and efficient way whilst maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

The clinic nurses work closely with Trauma & Orthopaedic team as well as many other members of the multi-disciplinary team, such as therapy staff, tissue viability and safeguarding teams so excellent communication skills are vital - as is being able to develop professional relationships with these key staff.

The post-holder will be required to take charge of the department in the absence of the Lead Nurse which will entail managerial responsibilities of the team and clinic.

As the Fracture Clinic is undergoing a phase of service development, being keen to be involved in developing new and innovative ways of working will be important.

The deputy lead nurse will have delegated responsibility for the running of the unit in the absence of the manager in the following areas such staff management, recruitment and retention, delivery of care and assessment of patients needs and the development of the service. Included in this role will be management and administration functions to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the unit.
