Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, cohesive, and friendly ENT department, due to the retirement of a substantive consultant colleague. The team comprises 7 substantive consultants, all with subspecialist interests. The successful candidate will have a subspecialist interest in otology and experience in paediatric ENT. All consultants in the department are involved in the delivery of general ENT services in addition to their subspecialist interest.
The post involves a 3-tier, 1:7, non-resident on call commitment supported by 7 middle grades (2nd tier) and 6 junior doctors (1st tier). Our junior doctors exclusively cover ENT only without need for cross cover from other specialties.
Main duties of the job
The otology services are well equipped with Zeiss operating microscopes, Medtronic high speed drills, Storz 4k videoendoscopic stacks and Storz surgical instruments, all replaced with new equipment within the past 3 years. A full range of otology middle ear ossiculoplasty prostheses are available and intraoperative nerve monitoring equipment is available as standard. Bone anchored hearing aid services are offered with full audiological support.
Subspecialist otology development will be available as per the successful candidate's areas of interest which may include support to develop endoscopic ear or middle ear implantation surgery. Appropriate support in terms of new equipment required to deliver new and novel services to the population of Cornwall will be given the highest priority.
The successful candidate will take an active role in the pathway management of patients referred to the otology service from primary care and engage with the wider team to develop innovative ways of delivering better care. Development of streamlined pathways in the management of vestibular disorders will be supported in conjunction with the existing otology and audiology staff.
