Junior Sister/Charge Nurse (Critical Care)

This Vacancy is only available to current employees of STSFT.

As a Senior Critical Care Nurse you will be responsible for the supervision, support and education of junior staff members of the ICCU team. You will be accountable for ensuring that agreed professional standards are reflected in clinical practice and be responsible for the provision of highly-specialist expertise/advice to nursing, medical and other support staff working within the Unit. You will also be responsible for assisting the ICCU Co-ordinator with the day-to-day management of a team of staff. You will therefore need to be flexible to help meet the challenges of managing change to the delivery of Critical Care Services across both our sites within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

To supervise, support and educate junior members of the ICCU team, acting as a role model.

To be responsible and accountable for the safe, effective and compassionate nursing care for all patients in the ICCU.

To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.

To be able to demonstrate skills and competence required to care for level 2 and level 3 ICCU patients by completion of National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care.

Support ward/department manager to ensure organisational goals/objectives are met within ICCU.

To participate in rotation onto Critical Care Outreach Team.

To participate in the delivery of renal replacement therapy (RRT), and to support the training, supervision and assessment of nurses undergoing RRT training in collaboration with the RRT Clinical Educator.

To assist the ICCU Team Leader with the appraisal and development of junior team members.

To manage patient care in the absence of the ICCU Co-ordinator.

When taking charge of the Ward/Department, or in the absence of the ICCU Co-ordinator, is directly responsible for ensuring that clinical, professional and cleanliness standards are maintained in the entire ward/department.

To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.

  • Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Completion of National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care, Steps 1, 2 and 3.
  • Post-registration qualification Critical Care Course which meets the requirements of the National Standards for Adult Critical Care Nurse Education.

Desirable

  • Management and leadership training.
  • ILM qualification.
  • History taking and Physical Assessment/Clinical Skills Course.
