We are seeking a highly motivated Medical Retina Fellow to join the Ophthalmology Directorate at Sunderland Eye Infirmary part of South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. As a leading regional centre with a strong track record in clinical excellence, innovation and research, our Medical Retina service continues to expand to meet growing demand across the North East. This fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity to work within a highvolume, specialist environment delivering care to patients with complex retinal conditions, including AMD, diabetic eye disease and vein occlusions.

You will join a large, collaborative team of medical retina and vitreoretinal consultants, specialist nurses, optometrists and imaging colleagues. The post provides handson experience in the assessment and management of medical retina patients, supported by access to advanced imaging technology and one of the busiest macular units in the country. The role also provides opportunities for involvement in teaching, audit and our active retinal research portfolio.

You need to have Completed MRCOphth or equivalent, full general Ophthalmology experiences are essential. Applicants should have evidence of ongoing professional development with good interpersonal and communication skills.

Work on our New Eye Hospital in Sunderland is nearing completion; the new hospital means Sunderland will remain home to the regions only dedicated standalone eye hospital. We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our integrated Ophthalmology team as a Speciality Doctor specialising in Medical Retina. The Medical retina department consists 6 wte consultants including VR and Medical Retina. The hospital is fully equipped with modern imaging cameras and also has the ability to perform Electro Diagnostic testing in house with referralto the regional lab if needed. There is a newly acquired B-Scan Ultrasound machine with specialist ultrasound clinics running once a week. The department also has a pattern Argon laser machine as well as Heyex2.

Support the current Consultants in keeping within the Trust targets for new patients and to continue to achieve 18 weeks RTT

To support the Current Consultants in keeping within the NPSA Directive for review patients (http://www.npsa.nhs.uk/corporate/news/delayed-appointments-can-lead-to-blindness-npsa-report/) avoiding cancelled follow-ups.

To maintain the high levels of patient satisfaction in the unit by helping to provide a Consultant led service.

To support the current Consultants in the medical and surgical management of medical retina and Glaucoma patients. To audit outcomes and compare to the standards currently being set.

To help with teaching and training of junior doctors, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and medical students.

To actively participate in service development within the sub-speciality and across the entire Ophthalmology unit

The post will involve outpatient clinics or sessions at Sunderland Eye Infirmary Outpatients department composed of one clinical session of four hours. The location of the clinic is open to discussion according to the needs of the service and the applicant.

Post-holders are encouraged to attend internal CPD held in the Ophthalmology Department.
