Job summary

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join the Renal Dialysis Team at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

Sunderland Satellite Renal Units are based at Durham and Washington as part of the Renal Outpatient Team. You will work alongside experienced renal staff to provide safe effective care for our patients.

We are looking to recruit a dynamic and forward thinking dialysis assistant to work as part of this team. Renal experience is desirable but not essential for this role. Healthcare Assistant experience in a health care setting is essential for this role

The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of the role with competency based assessments and mentoring.

Please be aware you may begin on Band 2 until all competencies are met.

This is currently a 6 day week service

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a Dialysis Assistants for 31.5 hours a week. The role mainly consists of assisting the nursing staff in planning, implementing and evaluating the care of out- patients attending for renal replacement therapy. It is also to be involved in ordering dialysis consumables, stocking up of the unit with dialysis fluids, blood lines and other dialysis equipment. It also involves moving dialysis machines, dialysis fluid trollies, chairs, assisting with patients mobility needs, keeping the unit tidy and disposal of any clinical and general waste generated during dialysis.

  • Minimum of 3 months experience of working in a care setting as a paid carer.
  • Recent or current health care assistant experience on the NHS settings

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a renal setting

Qualifications

  • Maths and English at level 1 or above (GCSE A G or equivalent)
  • Level 2 Health/Health and Social Care NVQ or committed to completing a Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker qualification on commencement to post.

Physical Skills

Essential

  • Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to communicate health related information in an understandable way to patients and colleagues, adapting communication style to meet the needs of the recipient.
  • Ability to communicate messages and instructions accurately to colleagues, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic skills of empathy and reassurance.
  • Basic keyboard skills.
  • Ability to use basic email system and document clearly, using plain English.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety requirements in a patient environment.
  • General understanding of confidentiality requirements in a health care setting.
  • Willing to undertake further training related to role.
