This is an enticing
opportunity to join our existing team of five microbiologists and infectious
diseases physicians working across our two acute hospitals and various other
services in South Tyneside and Sunderland. This is an exciting time in the
field, as microbiology and ID services work more closely together, and locally
where we are expanding our reach within the organisation and sub-regionally.
There are opportunities to work with specialised services in the Trust, to
become involved with ID liaison and clinics, to work closely with the
laboratory in Gateshead, and to further develop our antimicrobial stewardship
activities. We welcome applications from doctors with, or anticipating, CCST in
medical microbiology and/or infectious diseases. The role will be tailored very
much towards the interests of the successful candidate.
Main duties of the job
The main duties
of the role will be tailored to the successful applicant, but will include
participation in a busy day-time clinical liaison rota, validation of
laboratory results, attendance at ward rounds on the Sunderland integrated
critical care unit and liaison visits to other parts of the hospital as
required. The existing consultants work as a team, each of us with our own
particular interests, and will be looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join
that team.
We work closely
with staff across the Trust, in multiple disciplines and various grades. The
successful candidate must have excellent clinical knowledge and interpersonal
skills in order to contribute to this work.
The successful
candidate will be required to work one weekend in six, typically offering
in-person or telephone advice between 9am and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays at
Sunderland Royal Hospital and/or S Tyneside District Hospital. The successful
candidate will be required to participate in an on-call rota operating between
5pm and 9am shared with colleagues at a neighbouring hospital, typically one
night in ten. On call work is recompensed in the form of time off in lieu.

It is anticipated that the post-holder

Hospital. As the sub-regional integrated infection service develops, the
post-holder might be expected to work at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead.
The post-holder will be expected to work
at weekends and Bank Holidays pro-rata with the other microbiologists covering
STSFT and surrounding general practitioners. The post-holder will contribute to
the sub-regional out-of-hours on-call rota for provision of clinical advice to
South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust, Gateshead Health Foundation
Trust and surrounding general practitioners. The weekend and on-call workload
is regularly quantified such that the consultants take time off in lieu.

services are provided from a laboratory at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.
Infection doctors in the South of Tyne area attend the laboratory when they
wish, meet regularly to discuss laboratory issues and are closely involved in
developing the laboratory service. There are excellent opportunities to work in
