An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team at STSFT as a trainee in the field of Cardiac Science.

This full-time, fixed term position will offer training in Cardiac Science with sub speciality interest in either cardiac rhythm management or cardiac imaging (echocardiography) within our busy department at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS foundation trust over a period of 3 years.

Healthcare science is one of the most exciting and dynamic areas to work in. Join a unique team within Cardiology who are inspired to apply their exceptional scientific knowledge and skills to the prevention diagnosis and treatment of disease and long term care as a trainee clinical scientist.

Excellent training opportunities are offered within the Scientist Training Programme (STP) at STSFT which is a national postgraduate training programme located in hospitals and health services throughout England.

This is a 3 year postgraduate programme and successful candidates will be employed by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS foundation trust for the duration of your training.

Trainees are also enrolled for a fully funded part-time vocational masters degree in clinical science.

Main duties of the job

To be eligible for the STP, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

A 1st or 2:1 in Cardiac Physiology (PTP) or a relevant scientific subject (examples include Physiology Pure or Applied Physics, Biology or Human Biology, or Sports Science (if significant scientific content) or equivalent experience and appropriate underpinning knowledge and skills in cardiology as evidenced for instance by relevant voluntary registration (AHCS/RCCP).

  • Practical experience appropriate to role and familiarity with a range basic cardiac investigations.

Desirable

  • Previous Cardiology experience.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Able to undertake complex eye-hand coordination tasks.
  • Highly developed coordination skills with good dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination and skills required for the performance of fine analytical techniques.
  • IT literate.
  • Has an understanding of the role of an Echocardiographer and Cardiac rhythm Management in healthcare and disease and its application in a healthcare setting.
  • A committed, in-depth interest in Echocardiography or Cardiac Rhythm Management and its application to direct clinical care of patients in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge acquired through study and experience to formulate appropriate advice and judgements, including clinical judgements involving facts or situations that impact on patients.
  • Have an understanding of quality control and management assurance in a science or work based context.
