We
are seeking a passionate and skilled Consultant Urologist to join our
innovative and high-performing team at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS
Foundation Trust. This substantive Post focuses on Endo-Urology and general
Urology services, supporting key service areas including:
Stone
disease management.
Male
LUTS, including HoLEP and ThuLEP.
Potential
involvement in female, functional, or reconstructive Urology, depending on your subspecialty interests.
Contribution
to 2WW and routine outpatient clinic capacity.
This
role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the stone service at
STSFT and develop a subspecialty interest aligned with departmental needs. You
will join a dynamic team delivering a mix of theatre lists, outpatient clinics,
flexible cystoscopy sessions, and active participation in the weekly Urology
Cancer MDT.
You will be supported through tailored in-house mentoring,
particularly in subspecialty areas such as HoLEP, stone surgery, or
reconstructive Urology, depending on experience and interest.

department serves a population of over 900,000 across the North East and is a
designated Urology Cancer Centre, offering advanced procedures including
robotic surgery, cryotherapy, and reconstructive techniques.

Main duties of the job
This Post focuses on Endo-Urology
and general Urology services. You will join a skilled team
of surgeons and nurses. Key responsibilities include:
Provide
specialist Endo-Urology care, including support for the stone service.
Perform
male LUTS procedures such as HoLEP and ThuLEP.
Deliver
general Urology services, including 2WW and routine outpatient clinics.
Contribute
to subspecialty areas (e.g. female, functional, or reconstructive Urology)
based on expertise.
Support
reduction in waiting times and improve access to Urology services.
Engage in service development, teaching, and
supervision of junior staff.
You will
work alongside 15 Consultant Urologists across the Directorate, supporting
outpatient, diagnostic, day case, and inpatient services. Clinics are held at
Sunderland, Durham, and South Tyneside. The on-call rota is 1:12.
The role includes teaching and training at all
levels, contributing to audit and research programmes, and promoting team-based
practice and innovation. You are expected to support national
audits, recruit to clinical trials, and publish surgical outcomes. You will
also play a key role in shaping service development and enhancing patient
pathways through collaborative working and evidence-based practice.
