Main duties of the job
Applicants
should have full GMC registration, on the Specialist Register (or be eligible
within next 6 months) and be successful in the Intercollegiate Speciality exam
(or equivalent). It is essential that the applicant has significant
endovascular experience.
The department
is currently developing streamlined pathways for the management of specific
conditions and the input of the new post holder to further develop these
vascular pathways would be essential. A good working relationship with IR/nephrology
colleagues to develop an integrated approach to progressing the service is
encouraged.
Inpatient
services are based at the SRH arterial hub with our Vascular ward (C36).
Cross-sectional imaging support is provided at all sites with vascular
sonography at both SRH & UHND. The venous service is provided at both SRH
& DTC. Imaged intervention is performed in both our hybrid theatre (GE
Allia 740i) and angiosuite located in Radiology (Siemens Artis Zee-Q). Although
the endovascular service is largely surgeon-led/delivered with dedicated weekly
job-planned sessional allocations in both facilities, we remain well-supported
by the local interventional radiology team with excellent working
relationships.
The existing
Vascular Surgeons provide a comprehensive open surgical service (including
renal access) but not all are endovascular-competent. The successful applicant
will assist in addressing this and facilitate further development of our endovascular
service.

Job description
Job responsibilities
This
friendly Directorate provides all aspects of Vascular and Endovascular surgery
to a population of approximately 900,000.
South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust (STSFT) has recently
become one merged organisation and with this has come significant change,
including the establishment of Vascular Surgery as a defined Directorate.
Following
the recent re-organisation of regional vascular services, STSFT is now one of 3
tertiary centres for vascular services in the North East. The service currently consists of 8.5 WTE
Consultant Surgeons and 4 WTE Specialist Vascular Nurses supported by a full
team of junior doctors, nursing and administrative staff, with input from many
other services including Medical Physics, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry and
Physiotherapy. The team works closely
with the Interventional Radiology Department for MDT-working and the delivery
of some non-invasive treatments for our population.
A wide
range of treatments are offered to patients of Sunderland, South Tyneside,
Bishop Auckland & Durham catchments, including open surgery for aortic
aneurysms, carotid disease, renal access, peripheral vascular disease and
superficial venous intervention. The
service also provides a comprehensive peripheral and aortic (non-thoracic)
endovascular programme that is both endovascular surgeon and IR-delivered. We
are a busy unit with current annual volumes of ~70 elective aortic procedures
and >80 carotid endarterectomies.
All
in-patient activity and major operations take place at the Sunderland arterial
hub site, with outpatient clinics and imaging provided at Sunderland, South
Tyneside, Bishop Auckland and Durham Hospitals (University Hospital of North
Durham & Durham Treatment Centre).
Our dedicated vascular ward (C36) is located in Sunderland Royal
Hospital which has capacity for 24 patients and has recently been developed to
improve leadership with 1 Ward Manager and 2 Junior Sisters. The ambulatory venous service is presently being
revised for largely non-Consultant (ACP) delivery, and is to be provided at
both SRH & DTC sites.
PLEASE REFER TO ATTACHED JOB DESCRIPTION FOR FULL DUTIES OF THE ROLE.
