Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the senior team in the Audiology department at STSFT, as Head of Paediatric Audiology.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced Clinical Scientist with exceptional leadership qualities, who has an interest in leading and shaping paediatric audiology services.

You will be expected to lead the delivery of a high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centred assessment and (re)habilitation service for our population of babies, children and young people, as well as positively developing your teams and service area.

As well as leading the paediatric service within the Audiology department, you will be Team Leader for the Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, supporting the strategic development of this service, whilst providing clinical quality assurance in collaboration with the Local Manager.

You must be able to demonstrate excellent team working, as well as a high standard of clinical and communication skills. You will need to be able to develop good working relationships at all levels and liaise effectively with a wide range of clinicians and managers as well as patients and families.

Main duties of the job

South Tyneside & Sunderland Audiology Service provides a district level adult rehabilitation service and a sub-regional level service (including Tier 3 paediatric assessment & rehabilitation and diagnostic audiology).

There are 32 staff in the department, including 22 Healthcare Scientists, up to 3 Trainee Clinical Scientists/Audiologists, 2 Associate Practitioners / Audiology Assistants and 5 Admin & Clerical Support.

Main duties of the role:

1. Responsibility for a comprehensive assessment and rehabilitation service for neonates and children including complex cases, requiring highly specialist skills and knowledge, working at an advanced senior level.

2. To act as an expert resource for staff, families and children including those with special needs and complex requirements.

3. Responsibility for clinical leadership, strategic planning and operational delivery of the Paediatric Audiology service.

4. Fulfil the role of NHSP Team Leader, for Sunderland, South Tyneside and Gateshead.

5. Identify service pressures, using own judgement to deal with a range of routine and urgent situations and developments. This will require the planning, formulation, monitoring and review of action plans, policies and strategies.

6. To collaborate with the Head of Service in a programme of continuous improvement and development, resolving issues relating to staff performance, achievement of targets and capacity.
