Job summary

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to join our Vascular Nursing Team, currently comprising of 9 consultants, 1 trained ACP, 1 Trainee ACP and 3.6 WTE vascular specialist nurses.

The Vascular Specialist Nurse will act as the clinical expert and professional resource for the multi professional team, patients and carers within the specialty area of vascular surgery. The Vascular Nurse Specialist (VNS) will work within the existing VNS team for Vascular Surgery, leading the management and care delivery for vascular patients with emphasis on prevention, screening and surveillance of vascular disease, alongside time critical vascular care provision. This is an opportunity to join a well-established team and help to develop the service.

This post may be offered as a band 6 training post to applicants, progressing to band 7 on achievement of clinical skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have experience in vascular nursing and the ability to work within the multi professional team.

The post holder will be expected to work autonomously in the vascular ward and clinics utilising clinical examination skills and history taking as part of patient assessment. There will also be a requirement to support on call medical team with vascular referrals.

The post holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital. There will be an expectation to travel to other sites to support vascular clinical activity which may include University Hospital North Durham, Bishop Auckland General, South Tyneside Hospital and Durham Treatment Centre.

Main Purpose of the Job

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will work within the existing CNS team for Vascular Surgery, leading the management and care delivery for vascular patients with emphasis on prevention, screening and surveillance of vascular disease, alongside time critical vascular care provision.

As a CNS within the Vascular services, the post-holder will:

  • Provide clinical expert knowledge to patients.

  • Reduce length of hospital stay and unnecessary hospital admissions
  • To enable patients to spend a greater proportion of their time within their own homes
  • To ensure all investigations are appropriate therefore reducing unnecessary procedures that offer limited value to patient outcome.
  • To support the existing vascular CNS team to deliver support to vascular patients
  • To provide inpatient and outpatient and community support to patients.
  • To deliver a flexible approach which meets the requirements of the service
  • Provide direct access for patients, inpatients or within the community, either face to face or telephone consultation.
  • Provide education and training and clinical advice and support to Trust staff, patients and relatives/carers.
  • Participate in research relevant to the needs of specialist area.
  • Participate in service development within vascular services across the Trust.

  • Current NMC Registration (Level 1 adult nurse).
  • Degree in nursing studies or other relevant clinical degree or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent).
  • Mentorship qualification/equivalent and or Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Clinical skills accreditation. (May apply without clinical skills but post will be offered as band 6 training post until competence achieved.)
  • Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
