Job summary

The Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Childrens Urgent Care Centre at South Tyneside are looking to recruit a motivated and dynamic qualified childrens nurse to join their team in delivering quality urgent and emergency nursing care to the paediatric population

The successful candidate will be joining a team of over 70 experienced qualified nurses, nurse practitioners and health care assistants who see and treat in excess of 40,000 patients across both sites each year and will be involved in all aspects of nursing care to children with conditions ranging from minor trauma through to major medical presentations

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting time for individual development as we respond to the evolving demand of urgent and emergency care delivery across Sunderland and South Tyneside. The post holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital but will rotate between the Paediatric Emergency Department at SRH and the Childrens Urgent Care Unit at South Tyneside District Hospital on a regular basis to enhance their skills and knowledge in care delivery to children requiring non-urgent, urgent and emergency treatment.

Under the Urgent and Emergency Care Directorate, the state-of-the-art Paediatric Emergency Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital briefly comprises of an independent paediatric reception desk and waiting area, 2 triage rooms, a 6 bedded high acuity area, which includes 2 high dependency bays and an adolescent mental health room, a resuscitation suite, a 5 bedded low acuity area and an 8 bedded short stay assessment area.

South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust boasts the only dedicated Childrens Urgent Care Unit in the region. Set up in August 2021, the unit is nurse-led and treats children who present with a range ofminor injuries and minor illnesses. It consists of an independent reception, 2 waiting areas, an initial assessment room, 4 assessment bays, and a treatment room.

Duties of the post include, but are not limited to, triage and assessment, caring for children in the high acuity area/high dependency rooms/resuscitation room, administering medications, carrying out physiological observations and responding to changes within these, applying treatments and dressings, health promotion, nurse led discharge for a limited range of conditions, distraction and play therapy and applying longer term care in the short stay assessment unit.

Personal development opportunities can be gained through in-house training, simulation training and external courses including PILS, APLS, NLS, clinical skills and leadership modules. Career progression is supported and encouraged and we currently have almost 30 positions at Band 6 or above within our team including Sisters, Managers, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Clinical Practitioners

Applicants must be highly motivated individuals who can demonstrate a genuine desire to contribute to paediatric urgent and emergency care across Sunderland and South Tyneside. The successful candidates will be registered childrens nurses who can demonstrate a friendly, honest and caring attitude and are willing to develop their skills, knowledge and role within the departments as their experience grows.

Recent exposure working in an acute paediatric environment is essential and previous experience in a Paediatric Emergency Department/Urgent Care Centre would be desirable. You will also be expected to demonstrate a reliable work record, flexibility in working hours and evidence of continued professional development.

The departments offer a 24-hour service and staff work varying shift patterns to ensure the service needs are met
