Job summary

South Tyneside and Sunderland Speech and Language Therapy Service:

1.0wte x B7, 37.5 hours per week

Our Trust has been delivering a Mental Health in Schools Team Service (MHST) since 2019. There has been further expansion of Sunderland MHST with associated increased investment into the service and the creation of this new, exciting Speech and Language Therapy post.

MHSTs support education settings to introduce or develop their whole school/college approach, give timely advice to school and college staff and liaise with external specialist services, to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education.

The MHST carry out interventions for children and young people alongside established provision such as, counselling, educational psychologists and school nurses to build on the menu of support available The team will deliver evidence based interventions for mild to moderate mental health issues including individual, group and parenting work.

We are delighted that MHST, the ICB and our Trust recognise the importance of embedding Speech and Language Therapy into these teams to support the best outcomes for children and young people and to support our aim of reducing health inequalities.

Main duties of the job

You will:

  1. Provide assessment and advice for children and young people in the MHSTs in line with service delivery model.
  2. Provide accessible resources available for children and young people to support their communication needs and skills, to best support stable and positive relationships in their homes and education settings, through creation or adaptation of existing materials.
  3. Provide advice and training to the MHST and other clinical, educational, social care agencies and other external agencies through adapting communication styles and the communication environment to support individual children and young people but also to embed communication strategies within a whole school/college approach.
  4. Support MHST workers to deliver programmes and offers by embedding communication strategies and adapting language to ensure access to therapy and improved outcomes for children and young people.

You will be committed to team working and to developing other staff too. You will support less experienced staff through supervision, teaching and training. You will be well supported in this new role.

You will also be encouraged to develop your innovation, research and leadership skills in this new role for improved patient care and outcomes.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Speech and Language Pathology / Therapeutics or equivalent.
  • Registration with the Health Professionals Council (HPC).
  • Successful completion of a significant number of specialist short courses/self-study/training in the specialist area of work. Evidence of integration of this learning into clinical practice at a highly specialist level

Desirable

  • Highly specialist knowledge of a range of communication disorders in children/young people and appropriate assessment, diagnosis, and intervention techniques
  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-graduate training and experience equivalent to Masters Level, working as a qualified SALT with children and young people with a wide range of speech, language and communication disorders and experience in a specialist childrens role.
  • Experience and highly developed knowledge of a range of highly specialist clinical procedures and therapy techniques.
  • Extensive experience in different styles of service delivery group therapy, individual therapy and consultancy
  • Experience of collaborative working practice with SALT and other professionals.
  • Experience of working within a variety of settings eg in patient acute, intermediate care, community rehabilitation.
