Job summary
We are looking to employ a Highly
Specialist Hand Therapist (occupational therapist or physiotherapist) as part
of succession planning and to be part of the hand service redesign and
development for the Trust. This is an
exciting opportunity to help shape the future service and be part of a dynamic
and respected team.
You will bring your knowledge as an
experienced hand therapist to apply your skills in wound care, mobilisation and
splinting to achieve the best outcomes for patients undergoing hand surgery as
well as supporting other therapists in the team with training and education.
The role is split across both of our
acute sites at South Tyneside District General Hospital and Sunderland Royal
Hospital working from the occupational therapy and physiotherapy departments as
well as attending separate hand clinics.

Main duties of the job
This role ensures a highly specialist service of hand therapy is
provided to the Orthopaedic and Emergency Care teams through the effective
delivery of wound care and therapy interventions to patients who have undergone
hand surgery or trauma. Part of this
role will also include providing therapy intervention with patients with
rheumatology conditions. The postholder will also be required to provide specialist knowledge of hand therapy to
occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other professionals, and use specialist
clinical skills to implement care across a range of services and use advanced
clinical reasoning skills to provide specialist therapy assessment, diagnosis,
treatment and advice to an independent caseload of patients with hand/wrist
conditions.
As an experienced hand therapist, the postholder will also be expected
to support other therapists in the team with their training and development, as
well as undergraduate and pre-registration students on placement. The Therapist
will also contribute towards the development of protocols and standards, and
participate in research and quality improvement activities.
This post is full time, Monday to Friday.
