Modality Lead Radiographer (Plain Film)

Job summary

STSFT are looking for a dedicated and pro-active Band 7 Radiographer Plain Film Lead to join our friendly Imaging Department. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead the Plain Film service, ensuring delivery of high-quality imaging, excellent patient care, and clinical excellence. Youll play a key role in developing the Service, supporting staff, and driving innovation in-line with national guidance and local priorities.

This Post is a senior clinical/managerial position, responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the Plain Film service across various clinical areas. The Band 7 Lead provides advanced clinical expertise, professional leadership, education and training to a team of radiographers, assistant practitioners, and students. The role involves workforce planning, service co-ordination, and leading quality assurance processes, including audits, and compliance with radiation protection and IR(ME)R regulations.

The Band 7 Lead supports the development and implementation of service improvement initiatives, working closely with the MDT, and promotes a culture of continuous improvement and learning.

You will work Monday-Friday within core hours, however, there is an expectation you will work across a Sunday-to-Sunday weekly shift pattern (52 weeks per year) where there is deemed a service need. This role is based at South Tyneside with an expectation to work across-site and with other modality leads where required.

Main duties of the job

Ensure delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred imaging service in-line with local and national guidelines, including IR(ME)R and HCPC standards.

Act as lead point of contact for clinical queries and operational issues within Plain Film modality.

Supervise, support, and mentor Plain Film team, promoting culture of continuous learning and professional development.

Conduct appraisals, competency assessments, identify training needs across the Team.

Lead daily staff allocation and workflow management to ensure effective service coverage.

Oversee and maintain robust quality assurance (QA) procedures.

Monitor adherence to protocols and assist in their review and development.

Lead clinical audits, peer reviews, and service evaluations to drive improvements.

Contribute to strategic planning and modernisation of Imaging service in collaboration with Radiology Management and Consultant Radiologists.

Maintain effective communication with stakeholders, incl. radiologists, referrers, other departments, and external service providers.

Support cross-modality and cross-site collaboration to ensure smooth service delivery.

Assist with procurement, maintenance, and performance monitoring of imaging equipment.

Provide expert clinical oversight and leadership for Plain Film (general X-ray) service across all areas, incl. inpatient, outpatient, A&E, Theatre, and mobile imaging.

Manage stock levels and consumables within Plain Film.
