Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust as an Apprentice Healthcare Assistant. Successful applicants will undertake a formal apprenticeship training programme, to gain the knowledge and skills to work as a Healthcare Assistant.

During the first 3 months of training, the apprentice will be allocated a Registered Nurse as a mentor to provide support to achieve the required competences to achieve the Care Certificate, and an experienced Healthcare Assistant as a buddy for guidance. Once the Care Certificate has been successfully completed, the apprentice will continue training to complete the agreed apprenticeship standard, but will be able to work with less direct supervision carrying out Healthcare Assistant duties. The duration of the apprenticeship is 24 months which is subject to regular reviews to demonstrate progress.

Apprentices will commence on Annex 21* of the salary stated and to support the development in the role, the postholder is required to complete L2 Healthcare support Worker Apprenticeship Standard over the period of the apprenticeship. Maths and English at Level 1 (GCSE Minimum grade D-E/3) is essential for the post. Following the successful completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will moved into a substantive position

Main duties of the job

The apprentice will carry out direct patient care support duties for patients, working on a closely supervised basis until the Care certificate has been successfully completed. The level of direct supervision in performing duties which require training will be decreased once the post holder has been assessed as competent to carry out particular duties.

Participate in delivering all aspects of patient care.

Escort and transfer patients to different areas or departments of the hospital, acting in a professional manner whilst doing this and having regard to the patients needs and feelings.

The apprentice will be expected to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times and that they do not access patient related information (either electronic or paper based), which they do not need during the course of their work.

To undergo formal apprenticeship training, in order to gain the knowledge, skills and competence to work as a Healthcare Assistant.

The apprentice will undergo initial formal training in order to achieve the competences required by the National Care Certificate after the first 3 months of the apprenticeship. During the first 3 months of training, the apprentice will be allocated a Registered Nurse as a mentor to provide support to achieve the required competences to achieve the Care Certificate, and an experienced Healthcare Assistant as a buddy for guidance. The apprentice will have to complete key evidence including Competency Based Assessments (CBAs) in order to be assessed and deemed competent.

Once the Care Certificate has been successfully completed, the apprentice will continue training to complete the agreed apprenticeship standard, but will be able to work with less direct supervision carrying out Healthcare Assistant duties. They will still receive off the job training in line with apprenticeship regulations, which will include any workplace training which develops their skills and competence.

The apprentice will still need to work in situations where supervision and guidance is readily available until the apprenticeship has been successfully completed.
