Job summary
Undergraduate Medical
Education requires committed and interested staff to enable medical and
physician associate students to make the most of the teaching opportunities
available. We have a post for a part time teacher to join the team. This roles
will involve teaching alongside the current designated specialty teams while
taking a lead in some of the more complex planning of the curriculum and
delivery of key concepts of education.
This post
offers the opportunity to gain broad experience within the undergraduate
teaching team. There are no existing designated clinical sessions as the post
is 100% teaching
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role include
planning, delivery and evaluation of the Medical Undergraduate Curriculum for
Newcastle University medical students.
You must have a MBBS
qualification (or equivalent) and have completed the Foundation Programme. They
should be able to work as effectively as part of a team with both autonomous as
well as delegated responsibilities. Prior involvement in undergraduate or other
structured training/teaching is useful as the role involves being able to take
a lead in teaching and learning activities, ensuring effective time management
and having great organisational skills.
Good generic
medical knowledge is essential, as well as good communication and interpersonal
skills, and previous experience of working as a Doctor in a NHS setting.
You must have an interest in the specialty for which they are applying,
and be fully registered with the GMC.

To support multi disciplinary undergraduate teaching across the Newcastle University Medical School
curriculum within STSFT. The post holder will be expected to teach across a wide range of medical
specialties.
Background To The Post
In September 2017, Newcastle Medical School introduced a new curriculum for the MBBS
degree programme, which is currently being implemented.
In semester one of 3rd year, approximately 60 students are based in Sunderland and South
Tyneside hospitals for their Essentials of Clinical Practice Module, followed by their Medicine,
Acute Care and Surgery (MACS) Module. For the remainder of the third year the students
undertake clinical modules across the Wear Base Unit in child health, reproductive health,
and psychiatry.
We deliver mainly tutorial based teaching to the 4th year students, as most of their learning is
achieved in the clinical areas. There is planning and organising of this year group to be
considered.
In addition, approximately 60 final year students will be allocated to undertake their
Assistantships in a number of specialty disciplines, followed by Acute Care placements and
Medicine and Surgery Assistantships.
We receive students who are in year 1 and 2 of the course on a regular basis for Early
Clinical Experience hospital based teaching.
Within each major block of the curriculum the underlying principle is to create equity for main
teaching units in terms of resources. The ongoing appointment of Teaching Fellow posts is
an integral part of the strategy for undergraduate medical education within the Trust.
