We are inviting registered nurses, registered mental health nurses and midwives to be sponsored for the coming academic year commencing in September 2025 to be trained to become a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Health Visitor.

As a student SCPHN, you will be part of Early Help and Prevention, working alongside multi agency, voluntary and Local Authority partners and your training will include gaining the knowledge and skills to lead in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme pre-birth to 5 years, support local and National Public Health Initiatives and improve the outcomes for our most vulnerable families and children.

The programme is offered on a fixed term basis, full time for 52 weeks commencing September 2025. The training is Monday to Friday and annual leave is fixed throughout the programme. The academic study will take place at Northumbria University and your practice placement will be in South Tyneside Borough.

Main duties of the job

  • To work initially supervised then unsupervised as a student health visitor with responsibility to influence the health and wellbeing of children and families to improve the life chances and give every child the Best Start in Life.
  • To be responsible for developing the knowledge and skills to lead on the delivery of the National Healthy Child Programme through home visiting, clinics and multiagency settings e.g. Family Hubs.
  • To work with a wide range of partner agencies to support children and families in need, cared for children and children where there are child protection concerns.
  • To develop the knowledge and skills to become the Lead Professional for assessment, early identification and care planning for vulnerable families, children with additional needs and the implementation of targeted specialist programmes of care e.g. Early Help Plans, postnatal depression and Solihull behaviour management.
  • Work in collaboration with local statutory, voluntary and mainstream services to ensure that children and families can access other health and support services.

  • They must possess a BSc (Hons) 2:2 or above, or equivalent academic credits (240 with evidence of level 7 study).
  • Where English is not the first language, applicants should normally possess a standard of English IELTS 7.0 or equivalent. In the listening and reading sections and 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections. At least a 7.0 overall.

  • Post-registration qualification.
