Job summary

We are looking to recruit an experienced Medical Secretary to cover for 12 months maternity cover to provide a comprehensive secretarial and administrative function to the Consultants, medical and nursing staff within South Tyneside Specialist Palliative Care Team.

Monday, Tuesday, working for the Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team based at South Tyneside District Hospital.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday working between the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team based at Clarendon and the hospital team based at South Tyneside District Hospital.

To act as a pivotal role for all communication with patients and professional health colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team, internal departments and external agencies as necessary, to ensure continuity of patient care.

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive and effective secretarial service to the Consultants and medical staff at South Tyneside Specialist Palliative Care Team and other members of the specialist palliative care team.

To act as a pivotal role for all communication with patients and professional health colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team, internal departments and external agencies as necessary, to ensure continuity of patient care.

To provide a competent secretarial service to the Consultant team, making decisions and acting on matters of a non-routine nature on their behalf.

To ensure that all clerical and secretarial functions pertaining to the Department are carried out in an efficient and cost-effective manner according to the Trust Secretarial standards, local and national standards.

To ensure Meditech V6/Emis is accessed and utilised in a manner appropriate to the service, working in real time.

To maintain a waiting list position that meets national and local standards

Essential

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages
  • Understanding of palliative care
  • Knowledge of EMIS system and/or Hospital Information System (Meditec)

Desirable

  • Willing to undertaken necessary additional training

Qualifications

Essential

  • OCR/RSA3 typing/wordprocessing/business admin or equivalent experience
  • Good standard of general education including GCSE in English

Desirable

  • AMSPAR Diploma
  • Audiotyping certificate

Experience

Essential

  • At least 2 years recent experience in a medical secretarial role or relevant experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of a full range of secretarial procedures including diary management and arranging meetings
  • Experience of minute taking
  • Experience of audio typing

Desirable

  • Ability to read and analyse data
  • Knowledge of current legislation RE data protection
