Job summary

We are recruiting a well-motivated doctor with registrar level experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to join our current on a 1 in 8 second on call rota supported by Consultant Colleagues.

The hospital is a busy DGH with around 3500 deliveries a year, supported by a level 3 NICU. We have 16 consultants in the department, 8 FTE registrars, 12 SHO and 2 foundation year 1 doctors.

The elective work is spread across sites in South Tyneside and Sunderland. We have an established research department with a consultant lead and midwifery and nurse team. We are regularly in the top sites for recruitment numbers.

We have a strong training and teaching ethos and have consistently positive feedback from the trainees attached to our department. There is also the opportunity to be involved in teaching and training both to junior doctors and medical students from Newcastle University and the University of Sunderland.

We have a team of advanced laparoscopists who also train and teach and the department now has access to a robot.

Main duties of the job

We require a hard working doctor who works well within the wider team of doctors, midwives and specialist nurses and allied health professionals.

The successful candidate will see and plan care (supported by the Consultant) for in-patients, manage Labour Ward and attend Antenatal clinics including specialist clinics.

Gynaecology duties include care of in-patients, admissions to the Gynaecology Ward, perioperative care of patients and out-patient clinics (including specialist clinics oncology, urogynaecology, colposcopy, and Office Gynae clinics). The Outpatients and Theatre sessions offer an ideal opportunity for teaching on a one-to-one basis and all consultants are keen to participate in what they consider an important part of their workload.

It is a full 1 in 8 rota consisting of standard days, 12 hour long days and night shifts and is fully compliant with the BMA rules.

There is the opportunity to recruit to national trials and become an associate principle investigator depending on experience.

Following a settling in period, we may be able to support additional training such as ATSMs depending on the candidates experience and capabilities.
