Job summary

Title: Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Doctor (Hand, Wrist and Elbow)

The post holder will form part of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate, working across all University Hospitals Dorset sites. A specialist interest to complement existing expertise within the department is sought, especially in Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgery.

This post will be paid on the Specialist Grade, at 10 basic PAs with an out of hours commitment 1:5 weekends.

The new appointee will:

Undertake regular hand/wrist elective and trauma theatre lists/ LA Procedure room lists

Undertake regular virtual and face to face elective outpatient and fracture clinics.

Support and supervise junior doctors and middle grade staff.

Undertake ward rounds and patient review.

Have a specialist interest in Elbow, Wrist and Hand Surgery.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide a mixture of operating and outpatient clinic activity in Trauma and Orthopaedics..

The Trust has a history of successful service improvement and modernisation programmes including national initiatives such as Choose and Book, and the internal transformation programme that underpins the achievement of priorities such as the national 18-week referral to treatment targets. Medical staff are expected to support and deliver the service improvement programmes within their specialty and Care Group, and across the Trust.

The Specialist Grade surgeon in Trauma and Orthopaedics surgery, responsible for high level independent work including orthopaedic and trauma clinics, elective and trauma operating lists suitable to speciality and subspecialty experience for elective hand and elbow. A consultant mentor will be assigned to this role during the initial period until both parties are satisfied that the successful candidate is safe and confident to progress. A consultant mentor will continue to support in the medium to long term as required. An expectation of appointment to this role is extensive experience of senior/consultant level equivalent acting up in both a trauma and elective capacity.
