Glaucoma Nurse Specialist and Pre-operative Nurse (Ophthalmology)

Job summary

A very exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dynamic nurse to join our Glaucoma service within Ophthalmology at UHD. We are seeking an experienced NMC registered nurse with experience of working within Ophthalmology and pre-operative assessment. The candidate must have relevant clinical experience in ophthalmology, however, specialist support and training will be provided to the successful candidate.

We are looking for a motivated person who is willing to develop and become an autonomous practitioner within the Glaucoma team, helping to meet the demands of the service and needs of the patients. They will be working within an experienced and patient focused multidisciplinary team.

The suitable candidate will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, enthusiasm and must be a committed professional who strives to ensure excellent standards of care are provided to all patients.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist nursing expertise, facilitating evidence-based, patient-centred care and assessment for a defined caseload of Ophthalmology patients. This may include, but is not limited to, clinics of new and follow-up patients, post-operative reviews and telephone follow-up clinics.

To lead and run own nurse-led clinics, including clinics in Swanage as required.

To participate in the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of eye unit service policies and protocols with respect to the Ophthalmology service.

To act as a resource and to provide education for patients and health care personnel, as directed by the Consultant and senior nurse.

Analyses and interprets patient history and examination, presenting symptoms, physical findings and diagnostic information and formulates a patient management plan using specialist knowledge.

Carries out a defined range of diagnostic tests, often using highly developed physical skills, such as slit lamp, biometry, auto-refraction, intraocular pressure, Shirmers's test, Pachymetry test, perimetry test and systems-based physical examination

Uses sound judgment and analytical skills in relation to the assessment and management of patients, using critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision-making.
