Practice Education Midwife

Job summary

  • To participate in the integrated midwifery model working within both community and all areas of the acute setting working shifts, including day and night shifts providing a 24-hour, 365-day service.
  • Ensure that accurate, clear and contemporaneous, legible records are kept with evidence of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care using the SBAR process.
  • To be responsible for delivering and maintaining a high standard of day-to-day evidence-based practice for all women and birthing people in the designated clinical area/caseload
  • To maintain and continually develop in-depth specialist knowledge of midwifery practice relevant to the individual clinical area
  • To engage with women, birthing people and their families to encourage and promote holistic and individualised care supporting physical, psychological emotional and social needs.
  • Provide support and advice following pregnancy loss
  • Ensure the safe use of drugs in accordance with the hospital policy and The NMC Code, ensuring up to date on medicines management and midwifery exemptions.
  • Responsible for the protection of safeguarding of children with an awareness of child protections procedures.
  • To be a source of reference regarding Health Education and Social Care
  • To act as a practice supervisor- and/or assessor for student midwives
  • Be prepared to undertake cannulation and administer IV medication

Main duties of the job

To support the ongoing development and learning of maternity staff and support the culture of learning at UHD. Deputise for the band 7 in their absence, provide clinical skills within educational and clinical areas.

This role requires midwife specific duties including providing clinical care rotating within all departments within maternity.

The midwife will provide a full range of midwifery care, including health education, social care and advice to women with the maternity service throughout the geographical area. Your sphere of practice encompasses provision of care to the women and babies during antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods.

The care provided will be to the women/pregnant people and their babies in the community, midwife led, consultant led units, antenatal clinic and ante/postnatal wards as well as transitional care. Continuity of carer will be offered according to the service model and within the better births model. This role will involve on-call commitments where applicable and dependent on area of work.

The midwife will act as a support for students and other members of staff. The midwife will work autonomously within the trust in line with departmental guidelines and in accordance with the NMC Standards of proficiency for midwives, always ensuring safe and individualised care.

Desirable
