Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Respiratory Ward (Ward 2) at UHD as a band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse.
Ward 2 is a 26 bedded respiratory ward managing the exciting balance of acuity, palliative and everything in between. Our patient group covers a diverse range from young asthmatics to exacerbations' of COPD and Lung Cancer patients.
We have an Acute Lung Unit which has 2 acute Bipap/CPAP/Nasal High Flow beds, and 2 step down beds. We offer acute training and a competency programme in the 3 areas, as well as a Chest drain competency. Ward 2 offers training in all acute skills such as ABG, CVAD and Tracheostomy to help manage our group of patients, and proficiently in this area is supported by senior staff on the ward, our Practice Educator and Critical Care Outreach.
Our team is as diverse as our patients from newly qualified staff to experienced staff with a supportive nature. We also work closely with speciality teams' such as DAIRS, Palliative Care and the Lung Care Nurses, leading to potential career development in respiratory.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of flow, patient safety and staff on the ward.
You will be able to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skills including being proficient in extended clinical roles expected in the care of the acute patient. As the Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse it is expected you can make justified decisions in the absence of the Sister, and partake in holding the medical bleep, including bed meetings and safe staffing.
You will need to be able to work well under pressure and build strong and effective communication links with the Clinical Site Team, Emergency Department, Management and the Multi-Disciplinary Teams, including the management and escalation of the "Stranded Patient".
You will organise and be responsible for staff appraisal, training, support and development for staff on the ward.
Additionally, you will be responsible for addressing and resolving complaints, sickness management and adverse incidents.
