Job summary

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientists for the role of Senior Biomedical Scientist within the Clinical Biochemistry laboratories at University Hospitals Dorset.

  • To help manage and co-ordinate the day-to-day technical activities of the Biochemistry Department, prioritising work so that a safe and timely service is available and meets patient's needs.
  • You are required to have extensive experience in all aspects of Biochemistry at a specialist level.
  • You will need to be well-motivated and demonstrate the ability to be able to lead colleagues.
  • The applicant must be able to prioritise and organise their own workload and possess excellent communication skills.
  • Professional and personal development is encouraged and will be supported by the department.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to be able to work out of hours where required to support the service.

Please note this is a cross site working role. Working location will be based on department priorities. Therefore, being able to work flexibly is essential to this role.

Main duties of the job

  • To co-ordinate and participate in the routine processing of specimens; and to allocate work to the other BMS and Associate Practitioner staff to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • To act as a deputy for the Laboratory Manager when required
  • To ensure that specialised and urgent specimens are appropriately dealt with.
  • To participate in the technical work as required.
  • To organise and participate in the training programme for all staff within the department.
  • To ensure appropriate maintenance and safe use of equipment.
  • To assist in the development of rotas in conjunction with the other senior biomedical staff and ensure that they are operated correctly, and to liaise with the other senior BMS staff to provide continuous cover from the start of each day.
  • To co-ordinate adequate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents and co-ordinate their stock control.
  • To contribute to audit activities.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
