Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint two Band 6 Acute Oncology Nurse's to work within the Acute Oncology Team at University Hospitals Dorset for 37.5 hours. The role is to work across both Bournemouth (RBH) and Poole (PHT) hospital sites within a 7 day service.
The successful applicant will work alongside the Acute Oncology ANP and various members of the Acute oncology service based at RBH and PHT sites including Acute Oncology & CUP Cancer Nurse Specialists and the haematology and oncology medical and nursing teams on the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit (HODU) at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Oncology Assessment Unit (OAU) and Dorset Cancer Centre (DCC) at Poole Hospital.
The Acute Oncology Nurses will work very closely with all staff involved in the care of cancer patients but, in particular, Oncologists, Haematologists, AMU, Emergency Department & the Cancer & Palliative Care MDT members. The Acute Oncology Team liaise closely with both tertiary & primary care partners.
The role requires a motivated individual who is keen to improve the patient & carer experience throughout the cancer pathway especially for emergency admissions.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will require highly developed communication, organisation & facilitation skills. Clinical credibility is required & substantial experience within cancer, haematology, chemotherapy &/or specialist palliative care is preferred. Experience of working in either primary &/or tertiary care would be beneficial. The post holder will need to have some degree of flexibility due to the multi-site working & the competing demands of the service.
It is now a well-recognised national requirement for acute oncology services to be established in every hospital with an A&E department. Acute oncology services provide better recognition and prompt, appropriate management of acute problems related to a cancer diagnosis or the cancer treatment itself. The aim is for earlier input by the acute oncology team to ensure timely & appropriate management decisions are made. There is an expectation that this will reduce non-elective stay for all emergency cancer admissions to the Trust as they will be triaged appropriately. It will also help to reduce some emergency admissions and improve patient experience.

The team also need to link with primary and tertiary care colleagues and the wider hospital nursing and medical teams. Help to plan, deliver and evaluate specialist programmes of education and training to all grades of staff throughout the Trust, primary care settings and to patients as appropriate. Support the Acute Oncology team to develop and evaluate the provision of clinical audit programs and clinical guidelines that ensure the effectiveness of AOS using appropriate research.
