Job summary
We are looking to recruit a highly experienced radiotherapy physicist to come and join our team here in the Radiotherapy Physics Department based at Poole Hospital.
The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for the management, compliance, staff training and development of the brachytherapy physics service.
The postholder will work closely with the physicists, dosimetrists, clinicians and team of dedicated brachytherapy radiographers who run the service.
The brachytherapy service at Poole Hospital offers treatment for gynaecological (vault and cervix) and prostate (HDR and LDR), with the intention to offer skin and oesophageal treatments in the future.
The HDR service uses the Elekta Flexitron afterloader, with gynae treatments planned with Oncentra Masterplan software, HDR prostate planned with Oncentra Prostate and LDR prostate planned using Variseed. Mosaiq is used throughout the department as the record and verify system.
We are currently the only centre in the UK utilising full custom seed train loading for LDR prostate brachytherapy, delivering this service to >70 patients per year.
The external beam service has three linear accelerators (Varian Truebeams) with a fourth linac (Varian Truebeam) situated at the Robert White Cancer Centre in Dorchester. External beam treatment planning is done using Eclipse.

Main duties of the job
As Head of Brachytherapy Physics and an appointed Medical Physics Expert (MPE), take complete responsibility for all physics aspects of the Brachytherapy service:
- management of all physics aspects of the service
- attendance during theatre sessions (HDR and LDR prostate)
- treatment planning system commissioning and QA programs
- brachytherapy equipment commissioning and QA programs
- staff training, recording of competencies
- audit and reporting of quality, safety and performance
- future developments of the brachytherapy service for existing and new treatment sites
- provide advice relating to radiation safety and legislative compliance
