Job summary
University Hospitals Dorset are looking to recruit a General Maintenance Assistant/Boiler Operator to work as part of their Estates team.
The Boiler Operator works as part of a two person team that covers the boilers 7 days per week and out of hours on-call and is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring, operation and first line maintenance of the Boiler Plant that provides essential services to the Hospital and critical decontamination equipment (autoclaves).
You will operate and maintain the Trusts steam boilers, low temperature hot water heating boilers (LTHW) and associated plant and equipment, in an economic, efficient and safe manner, in accordance with legislation and agreed standards.
The successful applicant will need to demonstrate an keen understanding of all modern general boiler house operation and maintenance activities, both reactive and planned; they will require a willingness to learn, be a dedicated team player and have a proven track record.
The post holder will be qualified to the Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS)/Operator (shell Boilers) level and attend training every 5 years. The post holder should have preferably had experience in operating steam boiler plant and experience in carrying out maintenance work of a semi-skilled nature.

- The post holder will carry out duties associated with the daily operation of the steam and hot water boiler plant, i.e. operating boilers, controls and water treatment plant, completing boiler logs etc.
- The post holder will carry out plant checks, cleaning plant rooms and boiler house undertake unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work demanding the lower range of craftsman skill, relating to his training and experience, including Planned Preventive Maintenance work and labouring and have a basic knowledge of workshops safety practices
- The post holder will participate in the shift rota as detailed on BOILER HOUSE SHIFT PATTERN
- The post holder will carry out any other duties within the Estates function which may be required by the General & Estates Manager within the scope of the individuals competence or as laid down in agreements between the Department of Health and Social Security and Trade Unions

- Vocational level 3 or equivalent knowledge and experience in relevant field, i.e. engineering
