Job summary
Would you like to join the Postnatal screening team. We are looking for an experienced midwife with a NIPE/NNEX qualification and substantive experience to work within our postnatal department undertaking examination of the newborn.
The post requests an autonomous practitioner who is up to date with the requirements of newborn screening and can provide knowledge to enable families to give informed consent of the examination but also promotes patient choice.
Every baby is offered a thorough physical examination soon after birth to check their eyes, heart, hips and, in boys, testicles.
This is to identify babies who may have conditions that need further testing or treatment.
The examination is carried out within 72 hours of birth and then again at 6 to 8 weeks of age, as some conditions can take a while to develop.
This role requires NMC Registration and NIPE Qualification.

Main duties of the job
- To carry out a thorough Newborn Initial Physical Examination for all eligible babie
- To complete S4N, Badgernet and other documentation in accordance with Trust guideline
- To oversee the daily running of the NIPE clini
- To participate in failsafe procedures including monitoring the transfer of babies into and out of UHD to ensure all babies are screened and followed up in a timely wa
- To refer babies requiring referrals, following the correct referral pathwa
- To actively promote patient choic
- To support the vaccination programme referring babies as require
- To work collaboratively with Midwifery, Nursing, Ancillary and Medical colleagues to provide care to babies
- To be responsible for the maintenance and development of her/his own clinical skills
- To participate in audit and research projects as require
To support the development of midwifery practice and new roles within the service, participating in the training and mentoring of Midwives and students in the Neonatal Physical exam
To cover for the Band 7 NIPE Lead Midwife in their absence, attending meetings if required.
To participate in incident reporting as required, both locally and nationally.
To be involved in the monitoring and reporting of key Performance Indicators
