Job summary

We are looking for passionate and motivated midwives to join our forward-thinking, energetic midwifery team at UHD. Our maternity services across Poole and Bournemouth have now merged creating new opportunities and coupled with plans to relocate to a new purpose built maternity unit, this is a great time to join us and be part of our new team. We are looking to recruit Band 6 midwives across the following areas:

  • Antenatalward
  • Antenatal day assessment
  • Postnatal ward
  • Labour Ward
  • Community Midwives
  • MLBU

Maternity Services at UHD are located in the community in Poole and Bournemouth and on a self-contained site at the St Mary's Maternity Hospital, located across the road from the main Poole Hospital site.

The Maternity Hospital is the centre for all high risk care in east Dorset and is fully equipped to meet the needs of women and babies with complications, as well as women with normal pregnancies and births. The Maternity Serviceprovides a comprehensive service, offering women as much choice as possible in their maternity care; around 5,000 babies are delivered byour maternity staff each year, either at home or within the birth centre and labour ward in the hospital. The Maternity Service offers a traditional model of midwifery care with separate teams for the acute and community service with on-going development of continuity models of care.

Main duties of the job

The Maternity department is committed to education and development. We invest in an education team which supports learning and practice development across the department. Opportunities currently in place are as follows:

  • Access to a Practice Development Midwife and Clinical Practice Facilitator
  • Live Team Skills Drills
  • Access recognised post-registration qualifications in partnership with Bournemouth University
  • E-learning programmes
  • Post registration opportunities to study at degree, Masters and PhD level
  • Potential to progress through the career structure from Midwife Practitioner to Midwife Team Leader, Consultant Midwife and Matron.

As a band 6 midwife it is expected that you will be clinically competent and will take responsibility as a sign off mentor for student midwives. You will work a shift pattern that includes unsocial hours. We can offer you the opportunity to take on link roles within infection control / risk management / clinical skills trainer/ safeguarding as required by the service. About us

The Midwifery Led Haven Birth Centre has a total of five birthing rooms, three of these have pools to facilitate water birth and we offer an aromatherapy service. Care on the Birth Centre is managed completely by midwives and incorporates natural birthing techniques. It is fully equipped to support normal birth in a home-from-home environment.

Our two community teams cover Poole and Bournemouth area. We currently have a base at St Marys Hospital for the Poole team and then a Maternity Hub for the Bournemouth team. In addition to our community team we have a dedicated OASIS team which provides additional support to families. We also provide a homebirth service.

The Labour Ward provides care for women with high risk pregnancies. There are two dedicated obstetric theatres, a two bedded high dependency unit, six birth rooms and one birthing room with a pool. We are keen to promote active birth and where continuous electronic fetal monitoring is advised, we regularly use telemetry monitoring, including for women with medium risk pregnancies who would like to birth in water. Aromatherapy is also used and encouraged on the Labour Ward.
