Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Ear, Nose and Throat Surgical Clinical Fellow (CST1-2 Level or equivalent) to join our Surgery Department. The post is commencing 1st December 2023 for 6 months fixed term.

The post is predominantly based at Poole Hospital, and is suitable for candidates who ideally will already have at least 12 months' pre-registration experience, who would like to build on their experience of ENT surgery as well as General Surgery and Emergency Surgery. The successful candidate will be able to join the ENT team with the expectation of supporting the other surgical specialities if and when needed. The post does include unsocial hours, such as evenings, nights and weekends.

The post will be integrated into the elective and emergency workload of the department. The successful candidates will work alongside the FY1/2, nurse practitioners, and Middle Grade and Consultant teams covering elective and emergencies in the surgical department.

Successful candidates will have full support from their teams and supervisors so they can gain the appropriate experience and knowledge in elective and emergency surgery and progress into the next step of their careers. This will include access to clinics, theatre, on calls and ward rounds in both elective and emergency settings.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking self-motivated enthusiastic individuals who can work well together with our current ENT Team and more generally allied surgical and medical colleagues to continue to move the department forward and support patient care focusing on but not limited to:

  • Competence in the management of patients presenting with a range of symptoms and elective and emergency conditions as specified in the core syllabus for surgery.
  • Competence in the management of patients presenting with an additional range of elective and emergency conditions, as specified by the Otolaryngology specialty specific component of the early years syllabus.
  • Generic skills to allow team working and management of Otolaryngological patients
  • The ability to perform as a member of the team caring for surgical patients
  • The ability to receive patients as emergencies and review patients in clinics and initiate management and diagnostic processes based on a reasonable differential diagnosis
  • The ability to manage the perioperative care of their patients and recognise common complications and either be able to deal with them or know to whom to refer
  • To be a safe and useful assistant in the operating room
  • To perform some simple procedures under minimal supervision and perform more complex procedures under direct supervision
