Job summary

Responsible for leading and delivering a specialist pharmacy service for clinical trials.

Provide expert guidance on the pharmacy aspects of clinical trials ensuring that the pharmacy service supports clinicians and the Trust to fully participate in medicines research.

To deputise for the the lead pharmacist on the legal, clinical and technical aspects of clinical trials across UHD

To be a champion and advocate for clinical trials supporting both pharmacy and the wider trust in their promotion and recruitment.

Main duties of the job

This senior specialist pharmacist role includes:

  • Responsibility for evaluating, developing and leading a specialist clinical trials pharmacy service in collaboration with the Lead Pharmacist and meeting the pharmaceutical care needs for patients participating in research at the Trust
  • Working closely with the Lead Pharmacist - Clinical Trials, the R&D department and clinicians to understand future plans for clinical trials and the impact on capacity of the various elements of the clinical trials service.
  • Responsibility for ensuring compliance with Trust policies, GCP and regulatory and legal requirements relating to the prescribing, administration, storage and disposal of IMPs
  • Undertake risk assessments, as required, to meet medicines legislation and Trust policies, identify and manage the risks associated with the use of clinical trial medicines
  • Ensure that all activities involved in the provision of clinical trials services to commercial sponsors receive appropriate remuneration
  • Ensure that prescriptions for clinical trials involving systemic anti-cancer chemotherapy are built on to the electronic prescribing system and are validated and signed off by the Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Working with the investigator, research staff and external Clinical Research Associates (CRAs) to manage feasibility, set-up, initiation, dispensing, maintenance, close-down and archiving of trials including ordering, receipt, storage, return or destruction of clinical trial medication

About us

  • Ensuring that clinical trials are conducted to GCP, Health and Safety regulation and COSHH including handling cytotoxic agents and investigational medicinal product. Full audit trail from receipt to destruction or return to Sponsor or designee must be provided for all medication involved in clinical trials.
  • Prepare for and provide support for internal and external audits and inspection
  • Work with NIHR, Southampton and Portsmouth hospitals staff and Adams Practice to deliver clinical trials in the Dorset Clinical Trials Unit
  • Work with PI's, R&D and Bournemouth University on protocol development for any trial involving medication
  • Undertake occasional ward cover, dispensary, late night and weekend duties as required by the pharmacy department

The Trust currently has 125 active Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs) running across University Hospitals Dorset (UHD), with 1658 subjects enrolled.

The Trust has recently launched a Clinical Trials Unit and has dedicated research space in the Dorset Clinical Research Centre. The Dorset Research Hub (working in collaboration with other hubs across the Wessex region) has been in operation for the last two years where commercial and non-commercial trials are delivered at speed and scale. This ongoing collaboration has been initiated to benefit patients by facilitating rapid set up of clinical trials.
