Job summary

To lead on generic health advising within sexual health services, offering specialised advice and support in providing a comprehensive service for investigation, treatment and control of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV.

To provide advice, information, education counselling and provide partner notification (PN) to patients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, e.g. chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, syphilis and hepatitis B and C. This service aims to impact positively on the experience of patients by providing high standards of care, advice and clinical practice, working across boundaries and in conjunction with primary and secondary care and other agencies.

Main duties of the job

Sexual Health in Weymouth is part of a Pan-Dorset service. We are an integrated team, providing people in Dorset support for any sexual health need, including; but not restricted to; contraception, Genito-Urinary issues, termination advice, psycho-sexual counselling and HIV provision.

The Sexual Health Adviser, is an integral part of the team. They work closely with local labs and the results coordinator, to ensure all patients receive their correct results in a timely and efficient way. They have oversight of all positive results in the service. They a point of contact for those who require treatment, including support with their diagnosis, or support with telling partners about their infection by providing a safe and confidential space.

Liaison with all members of the team is important for best practice and evidence-based care, so excellent communication skills are required.

We are a teaching Trust so have many students from many disciplines, including medics, nursing, nurse associates and psychologists. Sexual Health is a popular choice for placements and spoke days, so skills with mentoring and supervision will be helpful.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND TRAINING

Essential

  • 1 st Level Registered Nurse with degree or relevant degree level study, e.g. psychology, social sciences, relevant teaching/mentoring qualification
  • At least three years practice of which two years is within sexual health speciality
  • Knowledge, skills and competency gained through experience working at Band 6 level in relevant area
  • Health Advisors Sexually Transmitted Infection Foundation qualification or willingness to undertake
