Core Clinical Fellow - Orthogeriatric

Job summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic FY3 or Core Clinical Fellow who will become an integral part of our orthogeriatric team. This will be a full-time position (non-training post), Monday to Friday 8am-4pm, without on-calls. The orthogeriatric department at Wexham Park Hospital is a developing department, known for the very good quality ofthe care delivered to the elderly patients admitted with neck of femur fracture.

Wexham Park Hospital is a 600 bedded district general and teaching hospital within the Frimley Health Foundation Trust. Frimley health is a leading innovative NHS foundation Trust serving a population of over 800,000 people with a catchment area across six counties. The Trust has three main sites: Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, Wexham Park Hospital in Slough and Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot. The appointee will only work in Wexham Park Hospital, a growing hospital, rated globally good and outstanding in some areas in a recent CQC inspection.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department of Wexham Park Hospital manage all the trauma and high-risk elective surgery while the low risk elective surgery cases are managed at Heatherwood Hospital. There are 13 orthopaedic consultants rotating in a system of scheduled trauma weeks. Integrated in the Department stands the vibrant orthogeriatric service.

Please note that this is a geriatric medicine job based within the orthopaedic service. There is no operating time in this post.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Conduct daily ward rounds of the patients over 60 years admitted with diagnoses of neck of femur, distal femur or femoral periprosthetic fracture with supervision as required from the Consultant Orthogeriatrician.
  • Work closely with the orthopaedic and anaesthetic teams for the optimization of complex patients in the pre-operative phase and for the management of acute medical complications in the post-operative phase.
  • In carrying out his/her duties, the appropriate appointee will make himself/herself available to confer with patients' relatives, if required, and to discuss DNACPR and ceilings of care
  • Take an active role in clinical audit, teaching and orthogeriatric service development.

The hospital provides regular teaching opportunities that the post holder will be encouraged to attend/take part in. This includes: weekly grand rounds, monthly Clinical Governance and Morbidity and Mortality meeting plus the chance to take active part in the monthly neck of femur fracture meeting. There will be the chance to drive audit and improvement projects.
