An opportunity has arisen for a Health and Safety / Manual Handling Advisor in our Health & Safety Department.

Working within the Occupational Health and Safety Team, you will be helping to achieve Trust targets and to build on our reputation for excellence.

A thorough knowledge of health and safety and manual handling practices in an NHS hospital is highly desirable. Some relevant training will however be provided.

Although you will be based at Wexham Park Hospital the ability to travel, between Trust sites is essential.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to provide training to clinical and non-clinical staff at all levels; therefore, you must have excellent training skills, and the ability to develop and present a wide range of health and safety and manual handling courses. You will also be expected to answer enquiries and provide proactive advice on health and safety and manual handling matters.

You will assist in the presentation and development of departmental reports, policies, guidance notes, advice leaflets, the intranet site, and e-learning courses.

In consultation with the Head and Deputy Head of Occupational Health & Safety and the Health & Safety / Manual Handling Manager, contribute to the development and implementation of changes to the Trusts policy in key areas of Health & Safety, Manual Handling, Bariatric and Display Screen Equipment (DSE) policies

To deliver a range of high quality and relevant manual handling training for the induction of new staff and updating staff (both clinical and non clinical) taking into account current legislation, national guidance and current best practice. .training packages in Health & Safety and Manual handling to all staff working at the Trust.

To recognise the need for, and initiate, additional specialist training as required by specific wards and departments

To contribute to design, and deliver manual handling training for manual handling links. To work in conjunction with the Manager and act as the lead for the development of a Health & Safety and Manual Handling Links network, and be the point of contact for advice and to act as a mentor for those Health & Safety and / or Manual Handling Links.

To assist the Health & Safety / Manual Handling Manager in ensuring there are sufficient venues for training and that trainers are available, and that the Manual Handling training room and other booked venues are set up for all Health & Safety and Manual Handling training sessions.

In conjunction with Learning and Development accurately record and maintain training records

To conduct workplace assessments in conjunction with the Manager and where applicable the Occupational Health Department and assess individuals on their ability to undertake activities in their workplace as required. To recommend for management action suitable control measures to eliminate or reduce hazards and risks in the workplace.

To undertake carry out a range of Health & Safety and Manual Handling audits on Wards and Departments across the Trust on an annual basis.

To assist staff in the assessment of patients in clinical settings, giving advice on how to move the patient safely and any equipment required. This advice can be either verbal, practically demonstrated using a hands on approach, or both, and as such contributes to the care and safe handling of that patient,

Assist and support the Health & Safety / Manual Handling Manager in delivering specialist care plans to patients with highly complex needs (e.g. Bariatric patients) To assist the Health & Safety / Manual Handling Manager with the purchase and storing of Trust Bariatric equipment.

To maintain an inventory and system whereby the equipment can be located at all times.

o participate in trials of Health & Safety and Manual Handling equipment from various manufacturers / suppliers and to give feed back on product suitability and changes that may need to be made, prior to purchase. To demonstrate the use of specialist equipment in both clinical and training environments.

To continually review through the audit process Health & Safety and Manual Handling activities across the Trust and ensure that staff and patients safety, quality of care, dignity and respect is maintained.

To assist the Head and Deputy Head of Occupational Safety in conducting investigations into incidents, accidents, claims and complaints collating information, producing reports, liaising with Patients, Patients Relatives, Heads of Service, Patient Relations and the Legal Department. Identifying significant causes and making recommendations in a timely and efficient manner.

Attend Health & Safety meetings and other such specialist working groups as required by the Head or Deputy Head of Occupational Health & Safety and Health and Safety / Manual Handling Manager.

To represent the Trust by attending relevant conferences

To maintain a high level of professional knowledge and competency

Ensure effective relationships are established with all staff across the Trust in order to facilitate the smooth operation of the Trusts Health & Safety and Manual Handling policies.

Be a role model for others to emulate, working alongside colleagues and exhibiting high standards of professional practice and behaviour at all times.

To undertake any other duties, as required, with the Occupational Health & Safety Department as are appropriate to the post, e.g. assist with promotional days such as the Occupational Health and Skills Blitz days.
