Consultant - Anaesthetics with an Interest in Vascular and CPEX

Job summary

We are looking to appoint consultants in anaesthetics with an interest in:

1. General

2. Perioperative medicine including cardiopulmonary exercise testing and high-risk pre-assessment

3. Vascular anaesthesia

4. Management

5. Teaching

The jobs are full-time posts comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). 7.5PA will be dedicated to anaesthetic sessions. The post holder is expected to undertake general on call duties.1 PA is allocated to this commitment. The remaining 1.5PA will be allocated to supporting professional activities (SPA).

Candidates should be in position to take up the role from October 2025 onwards

Job responsibilities

The post has arisen to meet the demand driven by the expansion of theatre activity and retirements.

Job Planning:

The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement between the appointee and the Chief-of-Service, that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it includes personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives. Changes having budgetary or contractual implications would also need the agreement of the Chief Executive.

One half day per month is dedicated to audit and teaching during which time all routine work is suspended. All staff are expected to attend except for those providing emergency care cover and those on leave. The directorate meeting is also held at this time. It is assumed that every member of the department will play a full part in formal and informal teaching of medical and other staff, and this is recognised as part of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Listed on GMC UK Specialist Register (UKSR) or within 6 months of gaining CCT in Anaesthesia at the date of the interview

Desirable

  • MRCP or similar qualification
  • Postgraduate qualification in perioperative medicine
  • Qualification in regional anaesthesia

Experience

Essential

  • Experience running elective and emergency vascular lists independently
  • Experience running cardiopulmonary exercise testing clinics independently
  • Provider status in ATLS ALS and PALS (or equivalent)
  • Willingness to teach undergraduate and postgraduates particularly, in the weekly protected trainee teaching sessions
  • Understand principles and participated in audit activity
  • Understand the principles of Clinical Governance and demonstrate experience of evidence-based practice

  • Faculty in teaching courses
  • Postgraduate qualification in teaching
