Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Speciality Doctor (ST3+ Equivalent) to join our Stroke team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will work across our Frimley Park Acute Stroke and Rehabilitation wards, operating with the multidisciplinary Stroke team. There will be the opportunity to work across the wider Stroke pathway and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on the HASU and in the TIA clinic.

Frimley Park Hospital is an established Acute Stroke center (ASC) for Frimley and Surrey Heartlands ICS. Our Frimley Park unit consists of a 28 bedded stroke unit comprised of 10 hyper-acute beds and 18 Acute/Stroke rehabilitation beds. At Frimley Health we admit approximately 900 Stroke patients to the unit per year, while providing Stroke services to our neighbouring trust, Royal Surrey Hospital, in the Guilford catchment area.

We provide 24 hour consultant cover for the ASC, delivered by a team of 6 consultant Stroke physicians. Our HASU is a 7 day a week service supported by daily consultant ward rounds and on call cover for Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy decisions. Our Thrombectomy service is provided by St George's Hospital and Kings College Hospital and we have a 24/7 Stroke nurse specialists. We also offer a triaging service to the local ambulance services to streamline Stroke referrals.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

  • Stroke rehabilitation ward rounds: 2 consultant ward rounds per week on Acute/Rehabilitation Stroke ward, daily review of new and unwell patients with SHO.
  • Attend and present at weekly Neuroradiology and Neurovascular meetings.
  • Attend and occasionally lead Multidisciplinary meetings on Acute/Rehabilitation Stroke ward
  • Participate in Stroke Follow up and Relatives clinics.
  • Participate in departmental audit and data collection for SSNAP
  • Participate in current research studies in the department and liaise with the stroke research nurse
  • Teach on the multidisciplinary Stroke Unit training programme
  • Present at directorate journal club and Grand round.

  • Knowledge and skills to contribute towards a comprehensive specialist service for patients with acute stroke
  • Competence in the interpretation of CT, MRI brain imaging including CT angiograms and CT perfusion.
  • Specialist assessment of patients with stroke and facilitate rehabilitation to improve outcome and provide acute and long term support
  • Contribute to a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, coordinated and goal orientated rehabilitation service including Early Supported Discharge Service
  • Knowledge, skills and attitudes to enhance activities and participation, to re-integrate patients with stroke illness within their community, family, social and occupational roles.
  • Opportunity to work in conjunction with clinical psychologist on Stroke Unit.
  • Understand the components and requirements for a comprehensive stroke service in hospital and community.
  • Competence in the assessment and management of acute stroke including thrombolysis and thrombectomy.
