Job summary
The post holder will take the lead specialist training role in Blood Sciences to deliver expert training to Ministry of Defence (MoD) pre-specialist Biomedical Scientists. This training requirement is mapped to the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Military Biomedical Science (Military Diploma), a mandated qualification for Biomedical Scientists serving in the Armed Forces. In this role the post holder will work closely with Military Biomedical Scientists serving in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force to ensure they acquire the knowledge and skills to deploy as part of a Field Hospital on global Operations.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the implementation, delivery and maintenance of the training and competency programme for Military Biomedical Scientists. In addition to Defence need, such initiatives are deemed necessary to achieve and maintain compliance with UKAS, relevant ISO, HTA and MHRA Blood Quality and Safety Regulations. This will span Haematology, Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion and Microbiology requiring exceptional cross-department collaboration.
The post holder is expected to provide leadership, advice and direction to both NHS and Military staff on matters relating to training and competency. They will also regularly engage and collaborate with senior Military Biomedical Scientists to develop current training strategies and implement new training initiatives.
The post holder will hold or be working towards a training qualification such as the IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice in Training.

Support the Laboratory Manager, Training Manager and Military Training Manager to ensure full compliance with all statutory responsibilities for Military staff training, education, and competencies.
Provide leadership, advice and direction to Military staff on matters relating to training, education and development.
Develop a comprehensive and workable training and competency programme for Military staff working closely with Laboratory Manager, Training Manager and Military Training Manager across departments. To include departmental tutorials, educational lectures and workshops.
Produce a bespoke Military-NHS competency framework aligned to the Military Diploma in collaboration with the Military Training Manager.
Undertake duties as an IBMS external verifier and examiner to develop portfolio knowledge and gain exposure to alternative training strategies at external NHS Trusts.
To be conversant with the relevant Trust and Military policies and procedures concerning training.
Where relevant, schedule and monitor an internal audit programme for Military Biomedical Scientist training to comply with the self-inspection criteria of the accrediting bodies (UKAS, ISO, HTA, MHRA).
To safely handle, on a daily basis, use and dispose of biological samples such as blood, urine, faces, other body tissue and hazardous and/or radioactive chemicals.
Maintain core competencies on relevant cross discipline instrumentation to enable the post holder to train and assess staff on these pieces of equipment.
Perform numerous, specialised laboratory investigations using a wide range of highly complex automated instruments applicable to role.
