Job summary

  • To assist in all aspects of clinical surgical care, working in partnership with multidisciplinary members of the Obstetrics & Gynaecology team in Theatre at Wexham Park Hospital (Occasionally Heatherwood Hospital)

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a skilled, informed assistance to the operating surgeon during the process of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Surgery.
  • To provide a comprehensive range of clinical care to patients in the pre-operative environment.
  • To contribute to the assessment and evaluation of patient care needs and the setting of standards of care within the theatre environment.
  • To participate in pre-operative and post-operative visiting.
  • To assist in all aspects of clinical surgical care, working in partnership with multidisciplinary members of the O & G team.
  • The post holder will provide expert assistance to consultants and specialist registrars, ensuring the best possible patient care in theatre and in the maternity or Gynaecology ward areas.
  • There is a requirement for the post holder to support the wider team in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge.
  • Working within agreed boundaries and meeting clearly defined competencies, the successful candidate will have the ability to work autonomously as well as within a team structure. The candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Perform and assist with wound closure, suturing, ensuring haemostasis and asepsis, according to level of experience.
  • To assist with the preparation of patients for surgery, for example venepuncture, cannulation, male and female catheterisation, patient positioning, prepping and draping of the patient in the operating theatre.
  • Attend pre or post operating ward rounds with the O & G team documenting in notes and coordinating treatment plans.
  • Ensure all members of the wider health care team are kept informed of the changing needs of individual patients.

  • Successful completion of a Level 6 UK accredited Surgical First Assistant course
  • MSPP (Mentor), formally the advanced scrub practitioner course

  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills

  • Complaints procedure training
