Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Consultant Intensivists to join our team of Consultants in the Intensive Care Unit, which is part of the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care. The unit has received the rating of Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.This post has risen following long term leave of consultant with responsibilities in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthetics and service expansion. This is a Locum post and there is likelihood for a substantive post coming up in the near future.

The successful candidate will join the team of intensive care consultants to cover the intensive Care Unit at Wexham Park Hospital. We offer full time ICM Consultant post or ICM job with additional sessions in Anaesthetics. We are also keen to support candidates with other areas of special interest (Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Respiratory Medicine) and encourage them to contact the department for further discussion.

We are keen to foster individual interests within Intensive Care Medicine, including research and quality improvement ambitions and will encourage continued development within a job planning review and appraisal.

Main duties of the job

The Critical Care Unit at Wexham Park

A state of the art, purpose built 12 bedded unit, level 3 and level 2 beds can be used flexibly depending on demand. The unit admits over 700 patients per year of which 75-80% receive level 3 care. Full invasive monitoring facilities are available. The Unit is ICNARC registered and supports a part time audit nurse. From June 2022, we have moved to EPIC which is a fully comprehensive electronic patient record system.The Clinical Lead consultant for intensive Care in Wexham Park Hospital is Dr Peter Csabi and the ICM tutor is Dr. Piotr Szawarski.The Post

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in developing services within the Trust and to share the clinical, administrative and teaching work with the other consultants in the department. Participation in Clinical Audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in the Department. Clinical research projects are encouraged. This is a full time 10 PA Locum consultant post which encompasses 9 DCC and 1SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. Additional sessions may be available on request. The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003).In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director.

Proposed timetable/Job plan

The proposed Timetable and PA allocation is indicative of the work required but is not rigid and will be flexible depending on service needs and interests of the applicant.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Deputy Chief of Service on behalf of the Chief of Service and Medical Director within three months of appointment.

The job plan will then be reviewed annually if necessary. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, this includes short periods of annual leave, sick leave, study and professional leave on a quid pro quo basis. Paid backfill is provided in exceptional circumstances. On occasions consultants may be requested to perform additional duties in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances or convert SPA time to Direct Clinical Care. Leave should not be taken during the full week of ICU cover.

The Trust is organised into Clinical Directorates. The anaesthetics department offers an active teaching programme for the junior anaesthetists which includes a fixed half day each fortnight for teaching within the department. Consultants also provide tutorials for those junior staff preparing for examinations. Participation in Clinical Audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in this department. Research activity is encouraged and supported by the Trust Research and Development Department.

Attendance at the monthly educational day is mandatory.Postgraduate Medical Education

There is a superb purpose-built postgraduate centre at Wexham Park, the John Lister Postgraduate Centre (www.johnlister.ac.uk). The centre is the headquarters of postgraduate medical education for the district. The centre comprises a lecture theatre, 4 seminar rooms, the main medical library, a skills lab and a large meeting and dining area. The lecture theatre has computer facilities, and the library is equipped with on-line facilities. The training centre at Heatherwood Hospital has a small medical library and 2 seminar rooms.Training Programme and Courses in Anaesthetics / ICU

The Anaesthetic / ICU department at Wexham has very active hands-on workshops on various topics. There is a once monthly Trust ITU clinical governance/education meeting.The skills lab at the postgraduate centre has a dedicated wet lab. Difficult airway workshops are held annually. The workshop follows the RCoA CPD matrix and is accredited for 5 CME points. Courses relating to Obstetrics, Human Factors and Regional anaesthesia are also run.

The WexSim centre is a fully equipped medium fidelity simulation centre. Scenarios of various aspects of anaesthetic and intensive care management can be practiced here. The WexSim is busy and used by doctors and nurses with very positive feedback.The ICU has recently procured a Point of Care ultrasound system. Our consultants include accredited CUSIC and FICE mentors. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop their skills in emergency point of care ultrasonography and pursue formal accreditation; or if they already are accredited CUSIC or FICE mentors they will have an opportunity to get involved in organising and providing US training. The post holder will be expected to keep themselves fully up to date with their relevant area of practice.
