Job summary

The Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) is a fast paced and dynamic clinical decision unit that takes emergency admissions. We are in a purpose built thirty four bedded pan speciality unit.

The Band 6 Sister / Charge nurse will support the flow of the unit, promote patient care and be a key member of the MDT.

If you have twenty four months experience in acute, SDEC or emergency care, this could the position to support your professional growth.

We promote proactive and visible leadership, to support the team and ensure staff development.

Main duties of the job

  • To be able to communicate effectively and liaise with multiple specialities including the patient capacity teams and the nurse in charge of the emergency department, whilst co-ordinating the flow, safe admission and discharge of patients from the unit.
  • To be able to assess, investigate and treat patients and carry out clinical procedures within the scope of own clinical competence.
  • Provide advice and support to other team members to ensure appropriate and timely assessment, planning and implementation of clinical care.
  • To lead a small team of junior nurses managing their appraisals, ensuring their MAST compliance, under taking 'back to work' sickness interviews and promoting well being and team work.
  • In conjunction with the unit manager and other senior nursing staff, facilitate the development of the service and personal development of all nursing staff within the clinical area of responsibility.
  • To deputise for the unit manager in their absence, attending appropriate meetings, maintaining an organised and structured workforce.
  • To be able to recognise staffing complexities and action as appropriate.
