Job summary
Coordinate the clinical in-patient management of plastic trauma in order to improve the quality of the patient's journey and patient outcomes through best practice. The plastics trauma coordinator will achieve this by working alongside clinical experts within the plastics department. The plastics trauma coordinator will also provide clinical support to the plastics urgent care clinic, being responsible for the assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for plastics trauma patients (mostly open wounds to hands, legs and face and soft tissue infections). The post-holder will be working in a team and will need to coordinate efficiently with the nursing team, administrative staff, and surgical team.
Main duties of the job
KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work as part of the plastic surgery multidisciplinary team to coordinate and deliver high quality individual patient management plans.
- Attend the morning handover and ward round to review planned activity and ensure work is allocated appropriately and safely.
- Liaise with the surgical team to anticipate and organise extra theatre capacity to meet clinical demand.
- Work closely with the on-call plastic surgery team to ensure forthcoming theatre lists are appropriately booked.
- Reassess daily those patients unfit for surgery in liaison with the appropriate specialist teams to ensure that surgery is performed at the earliest and safest opportunities.
- Organize for specialist equipment to be available as required for surgical procedures.
- Work with the junior doctors to coordinate investigations, treatments and arrangements for patients receiving care in own speciality in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
- Ensure that trauma patients are fully informed of when and where they need to attend for their operation.
- Ensure trauma patients are given nil by mouth instructions as per the Trust guidelines. Inform patients and staff if these need to be changed owing to theatre availability to avoid inappropriate starvation of patients.
- Be a point of contact for the trauma coordinators at peripheral hospitals, in particular the orthopaedic coordinators at Frimley Park Hospital to ensure the safe and timely transfer of patients.

Plastics Urgent Care Clinic responsibilities:
- To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care with minimal supervision.
- To undertake basic wound dressing.
- To undertake complex wound dressings under the guidance of the plastics dressing sister and Advanced Nurse Practitioner for plastics.
- To assist the surgical team with minor procedures in the PUC e.g. exploring and suturing wounds.
- Liaise with the trauma coordinator in the booking of the PUC.
- Assist the trauma coordinator in taking telephone trauma referrals when necessary.
- Lead the Closed Hand Injury Clinic (CHIC) on Monday and Thursday afternoons including assessing patients under consultant supervision, writing in medical notes, booking x-rays, organising theatre slots, and referring to hand therapy.
