Job summary

This is an opportunity to work within a multi-disciplinary respiratory team, as an integrated approach to Respiratory care is consolidated and expanded. The post holder will primarily support the Respiratory Physiotherapy Service and to provide Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services, and ambulatory oxygen assessment but will also be expected to support the wider respiratory team as required.

Under the direction of a registered physiotherapist with or without direct supervision you will supervise, guide and progress patients independently during Pulmonary Rehabilitation sessions working safely and within scope of practice at all times.

You will be responsible for the organisation of Pulmonary Rehabilitation sessions with administrative support; including waiting list management, booking appointments, filling classes, setting up the session, assisting with assessment, completing documentation, issuing letters, maintaining the database, and any other organisational tasks required by the service.

Main duties of the job

Under the direction of a registered physiotherapist with or without direct supervision to supervise, guide and progress patients independently during Pulmonary Rehabilitation programmes, whether these be remotely or face to face, working safely and within scope of practice at all times.

Job responsibilities

  1. COMMUNICATION
  • Develop and maintain high standards of communication, including liaising with other health care professionals and clinical lead to ensure the safe and effective development of services to all respiratory patients, but particularly to ensure the needs of Oxygen and pulmonary rehabilitation patients are met.
  • Report regularly and effectively to the supervisor / team with respect to patients progress / performance using verbal and non verbal communication.
  • Within North East Hampshire, Farnham and Surrey Heath act as a champion of pulmonary rehabilitation promoting the importance of exercise within the respiratory patient group to patients, health care professionals and the general public.
  • Discuss with the team any referrals from GPs, Hospital Doctors and Chest-Physicians and patients, to decide on the appropriateness of the referral. Using good communication skills communicate and liaise with patients and their families.
  • Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communications tools to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating. For example, patients may be dysphasic, not have English as first language, be depressed, deaf, and blind or who may unable to accept diagnosis.
  • Maintain up to date patient written and electronic records.
  • To develop an understanding of Trust and Board organisational structures and the structure of community services, and how we communicate within them
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up to date documentation in line with legal and departmental requirements.
  • Participate in the dissemination and sharing of information and skills with staff, students and wider multi disciplinary team.
  1. CLINICAL
  • To be responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care.
  • To independently implement and evaluate using clinical reasoning, under the direction of an agreed supervisor, prescribed physiotherapy activities and intervention, including spirometry, walking tests, pulse monitoring, respiratory rate, oxygen saturations and quality of life measuring.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of physiotherapy and apply this using specific technical knowledge.
  • To monitor clients progress and appropriately inform supervisor with respect to the nature of progress and any issues relating to patient care.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of patient needs and be able to adjust treatment interventions appropriately and safely, providing a range of activities that instruct and guide the patient to achieve goals.
  • To complete designated tasks set by supervisor, i.e. prepare treatment areas, clean and clear up any equipment used.
  • As required attend review meetings and case conferences reporting physiotherapy progress concerning patients within your caseload.
  • To assist in duties of personal patient care as required.
  • Maintain and ensure safety of mobility aids and equipment used for patients and report any issues to direct line manager.
  • Participate in the induction, in-service training and education of new staff and students as deemed appropriate by your supervisor including ongoing maintenance and evidence of competency as per local guidance.
  • To be responsible for delivering some of the education sessions in Pulmonary Rehabilitation, as deemed competent by your supervisor.

  • Participate in the trust / department staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development plan to meet set knowledge and competencies, and attend In-service training sessions.
  • To develop own knowledge and expertise within the speciality related to patient treatment, care pathways and health promotion, through undertaking relevant courses, being conversant with relevant policies, guidelines, attending regular updates.
  • Participates in clinical supervision.
  • Participate in clinical governance projects, and service developments as allocated by supervisor / department manager.
  • 4. HEALTH SAFTEY AND SECURITY
  • Promote, monitor and maintain best practice in health, safety and security. To monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others in own work area.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and be responsible for undertaking risk assessments in line with department and trust policy.
  • To delegate / refer to other practitioners when health outcomes or risks and needs are beyond own competence and scope of practice
