Job summary

The Occupational Health and Safety Department for Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust has a vacancy for a full time Occupational Health Nurse, based at Wexham Park Hospital.

To apply for the post an Occupational Health qualification is essential, as well ability to provide the full remit of Occupational Health services. Previous experience within an NHS setting advantageous.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is required to work alongside the Occupational Health team, to support the Clinical Lead Nurse, provide an onsite specialist Occupational Health Service to all Trust Staff and to associated external customers.

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the Band 5 Occupational Health Clinic Nurse and assisting with the work of the department which includes:

  • Health surveillance
  • Pre-employment screening
  • Advice on work-related health conditions (eg minor injuries and illness)
  • Immediate and follow up care after sharps and other work- related incidents
  • Advice to staff on relevant immunisations and individual advice that may be required

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To promote the specialist role of occupational health within the Trust and to external customers.
  • To manage own caseload from initial point of referral to outcome.
  • To provide clinical advice and support to the clinic nurses.
  • To provide and maintain confidentiality within the Occupational Health service.
  • To advise managers, staff and committees as required regarding staff health at work.
  • To manage vaccination clinics as required, and administer vaccinations in accordance with Departmental protocols, whilst maintaining the immunisation status of staff in accordance with agreed protocols.
  • To ensure that accurate staff health data is entered onto the Occupational Health computerised database.
  • To carry out venepuncture as needed
  • To carry out assessment of employees fitness following management referrals
  • To provide specialist advice to managers and personnel on rehabilitation programmes.
  • To undertake risk assessments for blood borne viruses and provide all aspects of follow up care, including clinical investigation, and referral to specialists.
  • To carry out health surveillance programmes in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • To carry out workplace risk assessments where medically indicated, and make recommendations for equipment purchase or changes in working practice
  • To encourage good health practices amongst all Trust staff
  • To actively participate in health and wellbeing initiatives e.g. smoking cessation signposting and the flu vaccination programme.
  • To provide advice regarding possible infectious diseases to staff and, where necessary, arrange treatment as required
  • To liaise with the Infection Control Department to provide best possible care for staff in the event of an outbreak of an infectious disease.
  • To assist in the organisation and implementation of staff health events.
  • To provide training and advice to other departments as required e.g. provision of a needlestick/sharps awareness talk on the Trust induction programme.
  • To liaise with the Human Resources Department
  • To refer to other departments as appropriate e.g. physiotherapy referrals.
  • To advise managers on fitness to work of employees
  • To advise on return to work and phased returns for managers
