Job summary

The Children and Young People's Community Nursing Service (CYPCNS) Team Lead is a key leadership role within Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT), focused on clinical and public health nursing for children, young people, and families in the Chichester locality. The post holder is responsible for operational management, equitable caseload allocation, and ensuring consistent, high-quality care aligned with national and Trust standards.

As a Registered Nurse - Child, the Team Lead promotes the health and wellbeing of children and families, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies. They oversee day-to-day team management, including performance oversight, leave authorisation, and staff support. The role includes mentoring students, healthcare assistants, and junior staff, as well as acting as a practice assessor for nursing students.

In collaboration with the Clinical Lead, the Team Lead supports clinical education and development. Where qualified, they may prescribe for children and young people up to age 19 on the CYPCN caseload. Prior to prescribing, the practitioner must complete the Trust's intention to prescribe declaration and be approved. Prescribing must remain within professional competency, local, and Trust guidelines. The Team Lead also upholds safeguarding responsibilities under relevant legislation and national guidance.

Main duties of the job

Work collaboratively with the Clinical Lead and Practice Development Nurses to support and guide the team, providing daily operational leadership and participating in 7-day service delivery. Lead and manage quality nursing care, information, and support for the CYPCNT caseload, ensuring resources are in place. Support and educate staff, promoting professional development and high standards of care. Maintain effective communication with all stakeholders and work flexibly across boundaries to ensure seamless, safe service provision.

Develop and review clinical protocols and SOPs with the Clinical Lead to support best practice. Support student placements, fostering evidence-based learning. Promote team expertise by maintaining key clinical skills in managing children's health needs. Provide training on equipment and treatment to families, carers, and staff. Ensure accurate documentation of care and telephone support.

Act as an expert resource and role model in children's community nursing. Collaborate with clinical leaders, matrons, and managers to develop the service in line with best practice and SCFT governance. Participate in clinical interest groups locally and nationally. Staff may be required to work flexibly across West Sussex and Brighton & Hove to meet service needs.
