Paediatric Physiotherapist in Neurodisability

Job summary

To work as part of a physiotherapy team working at Chailey Clinical Services, providing a high standard of physiotherapy assessment, treatment and advice to children and young people and their families. The postholder will primarily work with CYP attending Chailey Heritage Foundation School and residences.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a paediatric physiotherapist to join our experienced team of physiotherapists based at Chailey Clinical Services. As a team we work within a multidisciplinary team to provide physiotherapy for children and young people with complex neurodisability. This includes services to pupils attending Chailey Heritage Foundation School, residences, Futures young adults service, Chailey Rehabilitation and Transition Service and Out-patient clinic services.

This post is primarily to work within Chailey Heritage Foundation School but there will be opportunities to experience other areas of the service.

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic person with excellent communication skills. Experience working in paediatrics and with young adults is desirable.

The post will be up to 22.5 hours per week but hours can be negotiable.

We provide a full induction and inservice training programme.

Clinical

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of the practitioners professional activities.
  • To be responsible, as an autonomous practitioner, for the Physiotherapeutic management of children and young people in your care.
  • To undertake the comprehensive assessment, carry out diagnostic procedures and interpret the results for children and young people with complex, multiple neurological conditions using investigative and analytical skills.
  • To evaluate and reassess an individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plan, using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options in order to formulate a specialised programme of care.
  • To continue to develop skills and knowledge in order to provide physiotherapy advice, as part of a multi-disciplinary team relating to Chailey Postural Management. This involves assessment, prescription and on-going postural management reviews with relation to own clinical caseload.
  • To participate in multi-disciplinary, multi-agency clinics within Chailey Clinical Services and at tertiary level.
  • To provide treatment plans that are evidence based and are linked to a sound understanding of clinical governance.
  • To provide advice on highly specialised physiotherapy care and treatment for children and young people based on theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.

Communication and Working Relationships

  • To work collaboratively with CHF education and care staff, all members of the multi-disciplinary teams at Chailey Clinical Services.
  • To liaise with differing clinicians who may be in direct contact with the post holder with regard to patient care; other treating therapists, medical, nursing, wider MDT and school staff and other health care professionals working within the trust and externally.
  • To communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable form to carers and other staff including imparting unwelcome news.
  • To motivate others and to gain co-operation for interventions where there may be significant barriers to understanding.
  • To ensure timely and effective communication with the Physiotherapy Lead on all professional matters.
  • To maintain an accurate and evaluative record keeping system, conforming to Trust policy and according to departmental standards, and supervise the records of physiotherapy assistants and students within each clinical area.

  • To ensure close links of communication with other therapists in the trust working with the CYP and their families

  • To achieve the effective daily management of a caseload of children and young people including responding to urgent referrals, prioritising clinical work and balancing other related and professional activities in accordance with departmental standards.

  • To work with the Physiotherapy team to provide an efficient and effective service and to be involved in the proposal/development and implementation of departmental policies. To contribute to the short and long term aims and objectives for the service and establish priorities with the lead physiotherapist.
  • To be involved with working parties looking at policies that impact beyond the physiotherapy department.
  • To participate in the managerial matters of the department including attendance at staff meetings as required.
