Leg Ulcer Clinic Nurse

Job summary

Here in Brighton & Hove, we know legs matter! Now is a great time to join our Leg Ulcer Clinic Team as we develop our short-term treatment provision for patients with complex leg ulcers. Working across our 2 sites within a small, registered leg ulcer clinic nurse team, you'll be supported by Team Leads to develop your skills in managing complex leg ulcers.

This is a part time role, working 18 hours per week,Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) 08.30-14.30hrs - ideal for maintaining a positive work-life balance. We're looking for someone to cover 3 clinics a week across Brighton and Hove, so you'll be sure to have a varied working week. Each shift is 6 hours, during which you'll contribute to the day-to-day running and implementation of short-term treatment for patients in the clinic setting. This will involve undertaking Doppler ABPIs, differential diagnosis leg ulceration assessments and a variety of compression bandaging. We'll support you to interpret results and formulate plans for suitable compression or garments, measuring hosiery and supporting patients to care for their legs. Assessment and care-planning skills along with excellent communication is essential to work closely with patients, carers and wider MDT.

Main duties of the job

The leg ulcer clinic nurse is an integral member of the team, ensuring the smooth and effective delivery of high-quality clinical care within Brighton and Hove. On a daily basis you will provide short-term, evidence-based, specialist care to patients with complex venous and mixed venous/arterial leg ulceration. Responsible for the holistic assessment and subsequent planning, implementation and evaluation of short-term treatment plans. Promote healing, rehabilitation, self-management and independence of care within the clinic setting. Ensure preventative measures are in place for patients at risk of reoccurrences or skin related problems.

Additionally, you will be involved in the development of clinical skills and mentoring of qualified and unqualified staff within the Trust and from primary care, as well as having opportunities for educating formal/informal carers.

Working autonomously within clinic environments across both Brighton and Hove, you'll develop excellent clinical knowledge and effective management of complex venous and arterial leg ulceration. You will be required to adhere to NMC standards and guidelines, including national and local policies and guidelines of practice, education and conduct.

  • Sign-post and refer patients/carers appropriately to support their needs and ensure positive outcomes for skin integrity
  • Work collaboratively with patients to enhance concordance for those who require support to better manage their condition and engage with treatment plans.
  • Discuss with patients their treatment plans including the need to regularly attend on time at the clinic.
  • Be aware of impact on the efficient running of the clinic and reduce instances of clinic running late. Report clinical and non-clinical incidents and proactively manage risk to vulnerable patients
  • The team provide regular leg ulcer training to healthcare professionals and carers for which we provide support and training to co-facilitate with other nurses within the Tissue Viability Service.
  • Create an environment that is conducive to learning and development using evidence-based practice to develop the skills and knowledge of students and others who attend the clinic to develop skills in the management of venous leg ulceration
