Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Clinical Psychologist to join our Paediatric Neuropsychology Team at Chailey Clinical Services, part-time for a fixed term of 6 months. We are a highly specialist service for children and young people with congenital and acquired brain injury. There will be both uni-disciplinary and multidisciplinary working, providing psychological assessment and intervention to children and young adults (0-19 years old) in an outpatient setting. Within this context, a Clinical Psychologist could expect to develop specialist knowledge and skills in working with children and young adults with complex neurodisabilities,

The team works closely alongside a wider multidisciplinary team of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Paediatricians, amongst others. Assessment and therapeutic intervention work with children, young people and their families would be required, as well as consultation to other professionals. The post holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines and within the overall framework of the Service's policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

To work autonomously as a clinician within the Chailey Neuropsychology Service; providing neuropsychological assessment and formulation, psychological treatment and cognitive rehabilitation to patients and families with psychological problems arising from factors associated with their neurodisability and secondary mental health concerns, including liaison with other professionals (Health, Education, Social Care) as standard.

To ensure comprehensive assessment which may include psychological and neuropsychological psychometrics, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care.

To formulate and devise psychological treatment plans and recommendations, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client's problems, and employing methods supported by evidence of efficacy across the full range of care settings. To adjust and refine psychological formulations, drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

To provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner to families and professionals concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans for patients.

To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, to assist in the formulation, diagnosis and treatment of clients.

To contribute to opportunities (teaching, training, workshops, etc) for increasing psychological knowledge and understanding / and or reflective practice for the wider Chailey staff team.

To utilise skills in assessing clients and relatives who are presenting with highly complex difficulties, requiring the need for integration of a range of psychological theories, in order to provide appropriate formulation and intervention. This will require drawing on neuropsychological, developmental, and biopsychosocial knowledge when interpreting client/family situations, and providing appropriate formulation and intervention plans, including in circumstances where expert opinion may differ from the family or wider MDT.

To work as an autonomous clinician, with independent management of caseload and broader role responsibilities.

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including in specific models of psychopathology and clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Current registration with the HCPC as a Clinical Psychologist

Desirable

  • Completion of specialist autism assessment training (e.g. ADOS training)
  • Completion of or willingness to undertake further short courses of post-doctoral clinical psychology education
