Job summary

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Special School Staff Nurse to join our West Sussex Special School Nursing team.

This post is a part time, term time only developmental contract. The successful candidate will be supported in their transition to special school nursing, and will be encouraged to complete the Band 6 development programme.

The post holder will work as a Special School Staff Nurse under the direction of Special School Nurses, working towards development to a Band 6 Special School Nurse. They will be allocated a caseload for one school, however the expectation would be to cover at other special schools as required to ensure that arrangements are in place to support children with medical conditions.

They will also be responsible for training and education of school staff to attain competence when providing the day to day care for the pupils. The post requires a flexible, motivated, enthusiastic individual who is a keen team player and is able to evolve the role to suit the needs of the children attending the schools.

Experience of working as a Special School Nurse in a special school environment would be desirable for this role but not essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical and associated public health nursing of children and young people in the special school setting, in partnership with Community Children's Nurses, Community Paediatricians and other health professionals to ensure the provision of high-quality health care.

The post holder acts as an advisor within the children's community nursing team for training in mainstream school. They will liaise with clinical experts for the provision of specialist knowledge, skills and leadership as required.

The post holder will be responsible for advising and supporting school staff with the everyday health care needs of the children attending the special school. They are expected to work as an autonomous practitioner within their sphere of professional practice, working with the Head Teachers, the locality Children's Community Nursing team and the Community Paediatricians.

The post holder will be responsible for assessment of everyday health care needs; the development and implementation of health care plans or intervention programmes as part of the school health care plan, for individual children, ensuring that health care plans are updated as necessary and that care is delivered according to the plan.
