Clinical Sister/Charge Nurse – Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT)

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Band 6 Clinical Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Systemic Anti Cancer Therapies (SACT) Daycase Unit at Velindre Cancer Centre and Outreach settings. This is an exciting leadership opportunity within a specialist oncology setting, where you will coordinate the safe and effective delivery of SACT, provide visible clinical leadership, and support the development of nursing staff. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient-centred care, safety, and service efficiency, while acting as a role model for professional practice and compassionate care. The successful candidate will have significant post-registration experience in oncology/SACT, excellent clinical and organisational skills, and a passion for leading teams to deliver outstanding care to patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The clinical sister charge nurse will be responsible for leading a team of nurses in the SACT day case setting. They will work under the operational management of the day case manager. The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, participating and contributing to the wider clinical governance agenda including service developments and flexible working to meet the needs of patients. Managing a case load of patients receiving a range of Oncology treatments and associated toxicities. There is also a requirement to supervise and mentor junior staff.

To lead and be directly involved with clinical and operational procedures with patients, carers and relatives.

To undertake assessments and direct care plans for patients, relatives and carers, with the team for those needing in-patient care, day-care and respite support.

To work closely with patients and their families.

To ensure that all care plan requirements are met within specified time-scales.

To plan with the patient a leave or discharge plan that is followed through for each individual involving both nurses, community services and other agencies where appropriate.

To assist, support and advise other areas in the management of patients with complex general and mental health needs.

To assist in the clinical supervision of staff

Develop links with other agencies and include in the individual care plans of patients as appropriate.

To ensure community team are up to date with patients progress and full communication is made with the team and GP to facilitate periods of leave and discharge.

To be involved in clinical audit of the ward environment and patient care plan.

To liaise and provide guidance on your area of practice to other inpatients and community resources on the care of patients when requested.

To co-ordinate training and learning opportunities with the senior sister, to ensure that the highest level of standards in practice are upheld and developed within the unit.

To assist the senior sister in undertaking appraisal with Staff.

To assist the senior sister in annual training plans, following appraisals and reviews.

To ensure that a personal, professional education plan is discussed as part of the appraisal with the senior sister

To encourage all staff in research proposals as agreed with the senior sister

To actively encourage and drive the full range of clinical governance activities both within and outside the ward.

Ensure that personal knowledge and skills are up-to-date and will enhance the development of the unit and members of the staff team.

To communicate effectively through agreed channels e.g. documentation, ward meetings and others, directly and indirectly involved with the services.

To actively facilitate and encourage attendance by all staff at clinical supervision.

Demonstrate skills and knowledge to the team to promote standards of care, innovative practice and active participation in clinical supervision.

To have experience and qualifications as a mentor to student nurses and encourage future placement of students for their training.

Must actively participate in post registration training in accordance with N.M.C and PREPP requirements.

Must be up to date with national, regional and service area developments e.g. NICE guidance, NSFs, research based information.

Ensure up to date knowledge is maintained in respect of legislation e.g. Health & Safety, Mental Health Act 1983.

To be involved in all aspects of Health & Safety at work, and to attend local meetings with the senior sister
